What Brake Fluid?

As the title really, got braided hoses and good pad/discs, going to be doing a brake fluid change and wondering what to use. I guess a good DOT 5.1 but what is a good one? I think it has DOT 4 in it at the moment..

Re: What Brake Fluid?

Most high spec fluids are DOT4, not 5.1.

So look at the good DOT4 fluids.

Re: What Brake Fluid?

Right, ATE Superblue it is then.

Where's the cheapest place to get it? Need to put in an order tonight or monday morning ideally, so it is here by Friday morning.

Re: What Brake Fluid?

Oh, how much will I need to do a full brake fluid swap? I'm guessing about two litres. Will bleed the clutch system out too.

What's the best order for bleeding the full system? Brake system first or clutch? Does it matter which order the calipers get bled?

Re: What Brake Fluid?

1L should be enough.
Each caliper has a totally separate line from the ABS unit, so the order doesn't matter.

StopTech : Balanced Brake Upgrades
Brake Fluid Comparison

ATE SuperBlue is nothing special, but it's decent, and considering it's cheaper than most, you can't go wrong with it.
Otherwise, the Brembo LCF 600 would be very nice, but impossible to find, at least it was impossible for me. I would use it just because the calipers are Brembo on my car, to match
Motul RBF 600 and RBF 660 are also good, not very expensive, so it's a good choice. Put both(not at the same time, but first was RBF 600 and about a couple of months later, RBF 660, don't ask why, stupid me) in the E46 M3. Good stuff.
Best option, Castrol SRF. Only sold in 1L bottles, but quite expensive. I found it at a great price in my own country so I went for it. Great stuff, best you can find, but at the same time, most expensive you can find

Re: What Brake Fluid?

Cheers - that last one is very well priced but the delivery isn't - £9.25!

Silly question, but is this likely to be stocked by motorfactors/Halfords?

Re: What Brake Fluid?

I am pretty sure that any auto store will stock one of the good brake fluids. If you won't find ATE SuperBlue, you will find Motul RBF 600 or RBF 660, so you can't go wrong.

Re: What Brake Fluid?

Let us know how much fluid enters the system, I am really curious, manual says 0.55l, but I used almost the entire 1L bottle, with bleeding and all.

Motor factors: maybe, Halfords: no. At least not around my way, they only sell their own brand now.

I use Castrol Performance in my 156 ... seems to work fine. Got it from SGT, my local dealer, but parts guy had to walk around to their Lotus parts dept to get it! So if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me!

Re: What Brake Fluid?

I use Penrite Sin. Very happy with it, has a very high BP and reasonable price.

SRF is a massive rip off...plenty of guys I know who race reckon it's a joke and not worth the enormous premium, especially for a road car.

Also worth a look is:

ELF HTX115
Lucas GP600
Motul RBF600

Re: What Brake Fluid?

DoT standard is more important than colour or brand name imo. That's a reason for having it so branded. Nicht War. Not So?

Re: What Brake Fluid?

No, actually. DOT standard is actually an US standard, and to be perfectly honest, I think it's not a very good way to judge a product.

Tremolo, why would Castrol SRF be a ripoff ? Just because it's more expensive ? That's silly, sorry to say so. It is the best braking fluid you can buy(unlike any other Castrol products ). All rally drivers/teams I know use it, but yes, for a road car it's not really worth paying extra for it. I just found it for about 35 Euros per 1L so I went for it, otherwise I would have chosen Motul RBF660, which is only 13 Euros per 500ml.
