Class E race Car Build

It all started with a pub conversation, one of those "you know I reckon we could build one for less than 2k" moments...

So Lee and I are now in the process of building a Class E race Car to compete in the Alfa Racer Championship...

Home Page:

ARCA - alfaracer.com - Organisers of the UK Alfa Romeo Motor Racing Championship. The place for Alfa Romeo Motorsport News

We found a battered and bruised x plate 156 on ebay which we picked up from Stevenage on Good Friday:

The journey was a bit of a mare too as the M1 northbound back to the M6 was down to 15mph.

As a non runner it was cheap enough allthough as I've not stripped the bottom end yet we don't know how bad it is. The head is definately not worth saving though.

Saturday was spent on Lee's drive stripping the engine out, which went relatively smoothly, with the engine out and on the floor by 4pm.

Obviously, Lee did most of the work...

Re: Class E race Car Build

I stripped most of the engine down easter monday. The failiure was a bit bizzare. It looks like its had a cambelt change as there was tipp ex everywhere and the tensioner and idlers are new, but the main crank pully bolt was loose. Very Loose. The balance belt was absent, the key on the camshaft drive pully had broken and all 16 valves are very bent. The rear balancer shaft is also scrap.

Engine stipdown in progress:

I've taken the box off and I'm now waiting for a friend to return my engine stand. I suspect we'll be stripping the interior out over the weekend.

Re: Class E race Car Build

Looking good so far Chris, do you have any plans in mind for the final spec of the car? Or are you going to race it relatively standard but with most stuff stripped out?

Its effectively a showroom class, the only thing you can mess with is suspension and even that has some limiting regs.

Re: Class E race Car Build

I'll be following this thread with some intrest.

I have a delusional pipe-dream plans to build a GTV to the same regs later this year. If not to race than to use as a track day car.

Re: Class E race Car Build

I'd love to do something like this, but I work most weekends for the dosh, can't win
I'am sure there are a few loop holes in the regs worth exploring just like the F1 teams do.
I have a friend that used to race mini's in the 60's he saw tricks like stripping the innards out the alternator, removing speedo gears from the gearbox for less drag, running the oil at minimum in the sump-less drag again...anyways goodluck with the project.

Re: Class E race Car Build

It says on the web site posted by the OP that even the most basic of racing can cost about £500 per race. Is this the kind of money you will be looking at or can it be done cheaper.

I suppose it comes down to how many issues you have while on the track, crashes etc.

When race entry fees are usually over £200 per race, the costs rack up quickly. Petrol (tow car & race car) will quickly get beyond £100.
Add car prep, tyres, etc.

So racing is never going to be a low cost weekend!

Re: Class E race Car Build

I asked a question about costs of the series a week or two back. The answer I got was about £500-£700 per race. In fact here is that thread: https://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/gener...lfa-racer.html

Thats not too bad given it includes fuel and tyres when you compare it to the costs of a track day.

Re: Class E race Car Build

nothing can be done to the engine I take it? Id try turning a 1.8 block into a 2.0 and save about 20kg...

btw, I see you keep your tools in easy reach, just like me full floor and empty toolbox...

You are not allowed to do that in Class E.

Chris, what about the power steering? Will you be keeping it or binning it? Will you be keeping the car road legal too?
