156 2.5 V6 Q Mod's

Just bought my 1st Alfa (Today)... 53 reg 156 V6 Q. After belt replacement, Im putting aside up to a grand for potential performance mod's, be it suspension, brakes or bhp etc... Any advice? Please bear in mind I'm new to this..

Re: 156 2.5 V6 Q Mod's

All depends what it's got already ... if it's the Veloce model then you won't need to uprate the suspension as the veloce suspension is reasonably good ... brakes, put some DS2500's or Performance Friction pads on, standard disks are fine ... the V6 is reasonably powerful enough anyway, to get much more you're going to have to spend a fair few ££ to make much difference ...

... personally I think I'd go for strut braces, Eibach ARBs and possibly powerflex the bushes (if you want a car that turns in like a cart ..)

Re: 156 2.5 V6 Q Mod's

Sorry Chris but I don't agree with much of what you say. The standard Veloce suspension is still too soft. It would benefit greatly from an Eibach pro spring kit. This improved the handling of our old 156 V6 SP2 greatly. Strut braces for the 156 are a waste of money. They are pretty stiff anyway so a brace won't make much difference at all. I wouldn't even bother with power flexing. The fast road pads I do agree with but thats it.

I would (if I was you) get a Q2 diff fitted and The Eibach Pro Spring Kit. Also get some fast road pads fitted. I haven't much experience with fast road pads so do a bit of research yourself. Your car now stops better and corners like you will not believe. All for about £650 ish. Now to make it faster. This will take you over the grand I'm afraid but well worth it. Forget induction kits, get a K&N fast flow filter to fit into the standard box. With your next cambelt change get the inlet cams swapped for a set from the 3.2 GTA (£300 ish from Alfa) you will also need the bigger intake pipes. This will give you in the region of 220 bhp.

Realistically you can get all of the above done for about £1300 and you will have a really quick fantastic handling 156.

Re: 156 2.5 V6 Q Mod's

I certainly wouldn't recommend just changing the springs and leaving standard dampers on ... if you're going to do the suspension properly then that will be the £1000 pretty much gone (including fitting) ... and you didn't even mention the Eibach ARBs which give's a great improvement to the car ...

Powerflexing will make the car feel a lot sharper and therefore give you more confidence ...

... have to be honest though I'd leave the car as standard for 6 months or so and see what you don't like and what you fancy changing

Re: 156 2.5 V6 Q Mod's

The majority of what I suggested I did to our 156. The dampers were in good shape so there was no need to replace. I didn't mention ARBs as I haven't had much experience with them so can't really comment. The rest made our 156 a totally different beast, all for the better. Horses for courses I suppose but I doubt he will see value for money doing what you suggested.

... apart from the last comment of leave it alone and see what you're not happy with (in all likelyhood he'll love the car as it is)

I do agree with that bit. And it is a cheap mod lol. Drive the car and get to know it. Don't rush into buying stuff that won't be of benefit to you personally.

Re: 156 2.5 V6 Q Mod's

I would still change the supension even if it is a Veloce, as even that setup is underdamped.

I would do that before thinking of making it go faster in a straight line.

Some of the cheaper kits are only £250-300

Re: 156 2.5 V6 Q Mod's

This is great guys.. thanks. I only collected the car yesterday, coincidently on my 42nd birthday. I have spent the last 1.5 days cleaning it, and I must admit it's seems quick enough for me but, I only paid £750 for it, with 32K on the clock too. Because of this, i some money to upgrade/change things. It will take some time to understand your tech. jargon. Keep it coming.. cheers!!

a 53 reg 156 V6 with 36k for £750

I find the brakes to be insuffient, so would recommend an upgrade on them if anything, engine performace wise i would say i am happy enough with myself

Re: 156 2.5 V6 Q Mod's

they really are a good buy at the moment.
interesting that your breaks are naff.
my brakes are very sharp, probably had upgraded pads at some point.
also there is more than enough power though you need the 6 speed to extract it all.

I think I could stretch to cash at £750, then sell the Fiat privately.
