Well Happy New SUSPENSION :D --> FITMENT help ?!

.
I have some Eibach Pro kit springs and Bilstein B8 Dampers on the way for my 156 TS. Can't wait to get them fitted !

Is there anything essential for me to replace while i have the fitment done?

i have 60k on the clock . . had the suspension checked (at an Alfa dealer) and all was sound.. well the top wishbones had minimal play.
(I have just started getting the Upper W/B squeek but thought i could just get this greased?)

Also shall i get the toe in adjusted to O' ?

Re: New SUSPENSION :D --> FITMENT help ?!

That's a rare Alfa Dealer you have there, any dealer in the UK would already have changed the top wishbones and charged you for it

There is a rule of thumb that the wishbone bushes tend to go around 50K or sooner if the car is driven hard

I'd get it done at the same time if they are starting to squeak, it'll only get worse.

Well they did want to do the work but i said no thanks as my Alfa indie is cheaper and better ..( just a long way away)

So i think i will do the upper W/B.

What about the droplinks? i checked them out pretty hard and they seem fine? are they worth replacing?

What i noticed is a lot of my bushes are worn out.
I don't want PU bushes at the moment but can you just get a OE replacement kit?

I decided not to do the lower W/B as it's to much $$...

Does anything ever need replacing on the rears?

So Job list; fitting:
eibach springs
B8 Dampers
Upper W/B
Droplinks ?
Bushes ?

anything else?

Re: New SUSPENSION :D --> FITMENT help ?!

i've successfully cured upper w/b squeeks by taking the centre metal bush out & greasing it & the rubber that it fits into.

Front ARB bushes might need replacing at > 60k miles too ... i've seen 2 mid 60k miles car requiring them.

don't forget to remove the old damper bump stops - the new Bilstein dampers have inbuilt bump stops

The anti roll bar drop links are easy enough to replace, the only problem may be that when you come to do the suspension you need to remove the drop link and if the nut is seized then you may need to cut them off - really depends how much rust you have there

Ah o.k.
checked them today no rust really....hopefully they won't be seized.

Is it difficult at all to fit them yourself? did a search couldn't find any fitting assistance...

Re: New SUSPENSION :D --> FITMENT help ?!

The job is pretty straight forward IF they are not rusty. They have allen key to hold the thread and then unscrew the nut, easy if they come ok, otherwise you need to cut the nut off and remove.

You should just be able to remove both front wheels, car needs to be level otherwise the thread will get stuck in the anti roll bar, unscrew the nut from each end of the drop link and replace....................easy

Should take 1/2hr if no problems

My 156 is in worshop...to install bilstein B12 kit.
And they have call me, that the shocks don't fit correctly, because itīs missing some "anti-shocks".
I don't know what they are talking, but maybe itīs that bump stop.
They told me, that the bilstein dumper itīs wider and the standard "anti-shocks", don't fit.

If you can re-use your old droplinks I'll be suprised, they don't like coming off without being damaged.

Rust normally isn't such an issue for us here in NZ - they don't use salt on the roads so everything tends to stay in better nick.

Steve - I'm doing my car (87k TS) tomorrow night. I'll let you know how everything goes.

The job turned out to be pretty straightforward in the end - took us around 3 1/2 hours start to finish. No problems with sticky bolts etc and everything went in as it should. Not a bad effort as neither of us had ever worked on an Alfa before.

Didn't get to really put the new suspension through its paces last night (I was a bit knackered), but it seems to be very good. It's definitely firmer than standard - but although you still feel all the little undulations in the road surface, all the harshness is gone. Small bumps, like bridge expansion joints, just disappear. Handling seems to be sharper but I didn't test that properly.

I'll give a more comprehensive review once I've taken it for a proper drive.

Re: New SUSPENSION :D --> FITMENT help ?!

Harder springs and damping rates are gona put more pressure on the rest of the system, and the car is sitting lower so the arms etc are all sitting at slightly different angles and will be under different and increased tension especially when it handles better as you'll drive it harder. So when removing the old kit, anything that looks like the bolthead/washer is sucking into it, is perished, or has slight play will deteriorate rapidly so best to change now when it's all off than in a couple months time when it starts knocking and creaking.
