it's something to do with the alignment and lens shape that make them technically illegal - if these issues were sorted then they'd be ok, probably expensive.

There been a couple of people here who've done it without any hassle from the law iirc

xenons themselves obviously arent illegal, it's the retrofitting of illegal ones. Headlights should be designed for them and you should also have headlight washers. Never heard of any1 getting pulled on it though.

It's a grey area.

The law says that cars manufactured with Xenon headlamps need to be self-levelling and have washers.

However, the law says nothing about retrofitting Xenon headlamps. As long as the beam pattern is as it should be (Most Xenon kits aren't, so beware), and they're less than 50W, you're safe.

That said, you can't buy a headlamp bulb from Halfords that is less than 50W, they're mostly 55W.

Correct, but wattage is a measure of power consumption, and the bulbs emit heat and also probably a TINY bit of noise.

the lights i was looking at are 35 watts , and fit into the original headlamps , but are much brighter so they say , a work mate has them in a integra type r and has not had problems so far was just wondering what the chances of being pulled over by the plod were and if anyone has been

Re: xenon lights , any one been pulled over ?

I was pulled once and told that my lights were causing too much glare. The H7r HID bulb out now has a metal shroud and has been designed to work with normal reflector headlights and creates more of a cut-off for dipped beam and reduces glare. Never heard of xenon being illegal, maybe its just in your country.. but I highly doubt that the cops who pull you over will know whether your car comes standard with xenon lights or not.

Just fitted the H7R HID Xenons to normal reflector headlights. Superb! These H7R's work really well.

Re: xenon lights , any one been pulled over ?

When you fit the bulb, (little tab at 12 o'clock) use a small mirror to make sure they are located properly in the headlight as the base of the bulb is plastic and does not locate as positively as halogens with their metal base ring.
