156 2.5V6 upgrade to 3.0V6

Hi All

I'm planning on upgrading my 1998 2.5 V6 156 (cf2?) to a 3.0 V6 sometime in the future. In the meantime I'm keeping an eye out for a suitable donor car.

I'm in New Zealand, so the donor will most probably be a 166 as there are a few around, but they are mostly auto here.

Does it matter which year model or transmission type the donor engine comes from or would some be easier to fit in my car than others?

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. I've been told the 2.5 ecu will work as is - from your post I take it as not being the case? Is there a ecu map available for this?

You might want to sift through Chris155ís threads about his 156 2.5 to 3.0 and to 3.2 conversions. He documented more than most people so have a google around!

Oh and he used the 2.5 ecu with 3.0 engine without mapping

Thanks, I will do further searching. I found a link to one of his posts, but my biggest question remains unanswered: will a 3.0 from a 166 Auto fit in my manual 156 without any mods. And if not, what is the scale of the mods required to make it fit.

i think itís a straight fit, except for the intake air box. My 156 had the same transplant.

156, 166

it will fit, you will need your gearbox and clutch + flywheel. The biggest problem is the rear engine mount, on 166 its together with right halfshaft and it has lines for oil cooler on it. On 156 rear mount is on the gearbox diff casing and 2.5 doesnt have an oil cooler (only water to oil exchanger)
I have 3.0 in 156 and 2.5 ecu without remap, it goes well.

Thanks for the info. What did you do for the airbox on yours?

Thanks Alan. When you say it will fit, but with issues with the rear engine mount, is that wirh the 3.0 Auto or are the same issues with the 3.0 Manual as well?

Do you perhaps have any info or photos of the changes required to make the engine mount work?

Same issue with a manual 166 engine. Itís the mount thatís a part of the casing. You can however swap casing but anyhow.. youíve got the right gearbox on your 156 now so like states, use the gearbox, flywheel and clutch.

If the 166 engine is a euro3 youíll need to swap over some electrical connectors as well. Itís all written down in Chrisí thread. But between your engine and the new one you have all you need.
Oh and, I think the top engine mount differs as well if i recall correctly?

Thank you. I'll have a good read of Chris' post, but in the interim it's goid to have confirmation that it's possible to make an engine from an auto donor car work.

There's a 166 with a stuffed gearbox going cheap...
