Smart Heating/Cooling

This just turned up in the post box:

https://www.tado.com/gb/smart-air-conditioner

Should reduce my 'leccy bills this summer, hopefully.

It's a tiny box ~3/4 the size of a CD box.

Looks very easy to set up.

Luddite.

The idea is to have more control and run it more off peak etc.

Set it up last night. Piece of cake.
Just popped out for a coffee to test its
stalker skill.

The interface on the unit is pretty cool.
Software app is okay but will be suggesting
some changes.

Really impressed with it so far.

I think the bigger gains will be in winter.

no peak charges forges for me, so I just need to determine the most effective time to run them.. When I'm home is a good start....

My off-peak hours are 1.30am-7.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm.

The standard A/C controller isn't able to take that into account.

Next-up: more intelligent water heater controller.
Currently it bangs-on during off-peak and heats 60litres
of water whether I need it or not.

I'd like to be able to switch it off whilst I'm away but have it
come back on the day before I return ....

a 1 week timer not sufficient? or I'm sure this thing you bought can do it, but you might have to send it a command.

I'm wondering what happens to your heating when it's hacked via the nice open port you have in your firewall for it to function

La La La, I'm not listening!

I've not opened a port anywhere.

Logged a ticket on Friday on a small item. They've fixed it today.
Good reactive service.

Working really well so far.

And it doesn't bang-on in the middle of the night and wake me up anymore
as the fan-speed control is much finer.

Happy chappy.

I'm glad you're satisfied with it. Some people make the most out of new technology, some don't. It's all in the personal preference I suppose.

So looks like Tado has saved me 30kwH compared to the same period last year.

Woohoo. 3 whole Euros less paid to EDF!

I guess heating this winter will show a bigger gain.

If it is anything like the Nest thermostat that I played with a while back, we've learned one thing: TT4N lives on his own. The Nest is fundamentally flawed - it can only track one phone. So I leave the house, and everyone else goes cold. I can't see if this device is the same.

Most of the time, a reasonably intelligent time-switch does the job. If you do something "out of pattern" you just press the "boost" switch.

The biggest problem with all these things is that they work really well .... until they don't. Then you need a phd in computer science to work out what has happened.

Also, as you are finding, the savings are pretty small in comparison to the purchase price....

Yeah, but it's a cool piece of kit.
This one seems to track multiple phones okay.

I did have to ask them to reduce the 350metre
"fence" to 250 so it turns off when I'm having
coffee in the village square ...

I'm going to ask them to add an alert feature so that if the temperature goes
above 30 deg C it informs you that your house is on fire ...

Possibly!

If I use EDF's new eco website (equilibre.edf.fr) A/C is actually a very very small percentage of overall
electricity chez moi. Doesn't even show up in the overall consumption pie-chart as a separate item!
