Vunerability of USB ports?

Just wondered if they are open to attack by clever folk out there?

USB sticks are banned in some big companies and in some the ports are disabled (unplugged inside). Good anti virus software will block the auto play feature. It's easy to introduce a virus from an infected USB stick.

Can't use them in our library's thanks to devodes plugging in USB sticks that caused issues with the network.

Blanket ban, even on computers not connected to network.

But the library will sell you a new one.😃👍

That's more to stop insider data theft, I think.

Thanks for the interesting replies guys.:

I've switch from a RF mouse and usb stick,(at least I think that's what it is ) to an Apple Mighty Mouse because the usb stick I had been using was flashing continously, which it never did before?

Forgot to mention that when I removed the RF usb stick, the system crashed and then rebooted, which it doesn't do now with the Apple corded replacement?

There are exploits using USB sticks aside from the data that risk. One involved the stick mis declaring itself as a keyboard instead of a memory device after which it was free to issue commands.

I doubt this had anything to do with your issue ZF

At work the USBs on laptops are not disabled
but there is an array of protection both
on the laptop and the network.

Everything is logged. And they throw a wobbly if you put stuff
on a USB drive that is not encrypted.

Just wondering on the reasoning for the query, conteXt of Thought is always good.

QuestioNs usually comE from a sTimulus of some sort.

We confiscate USB sticks, laptops with cameras (pretty much all now) and mobile phones before proceeding into.....

BUT ALL are associated with DATA theft / social engineering.

Usually NO! USB wise.. Unless you plug in 1 of the WiFi USB's or a key-logger, but anything is possible, even in firm ware.

Auditors big thing last few years was portable media and USB, but with the advent of Google and Drive that is all to sh.t anyway.
