Transferring SMS's to a new phone

I just got a new phone, and I want to transfer all the SMS's (texts) from my old phone to it.

Both phones are Android, the old one is a Moto G, the new one is a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.

Who could tell this old git how to do it please?

(In mitigation, I would say that that I successfully transferred all my Contacts )

Why?

I think it does it automatically onto Google's Cloud.

My sms app on the Asus has a specific backup/restore in its setting.
(I just discovered)

There you are Nev, I rub the bottle and you magically appear!

Because I like having all my old texts and comms. Call me a sentimental old fool if you like (you probably do) .

You will need to download some transfer software I believe.

You can search the web, if you can get to the computer for all the newspapers, magazines and corned beef cans.

...you lot...you're a bunch of flippin' animals .

Well despite the lack of any tangible assistance , I sorted meself out: I got Back Up & Restore on both the phones in question. Backed up all the texts on my old phone, which got put into a specially-made folder on the phone. Likewise the new phone, which had already received a couple texts.

The online tutorials weren't much help for a dinosaur like me (they're in techy-speak, not for the likes of me) but I sussed that if I connected both phones to my computer, I could delve into their files and drag & drop the 5MB or so of texts from the old phone into the relevant folder on the new phone.

Then I had to make Back Up & Restore the default App for messaging on the new phone, and open it up. All the old texts flooded into the messaging folder, and when finished, I reverted to the proper messaging App on the phone.

All my old texts were there!

Uninstalled the App from both phones, sorted.

And doing it via my computer avoided any Cloud malarkey .

Well-chuffed .

"You will need to download some transfer software I believe" is in fact what I suggested, do you need spoon feeding?

And is that what you did? download some software.(sarcasm)

If you did:

Winner winner chicken dinner then?

Being advised to download some software is hardly spoonfeeding, the thought had crossed my mind . I'm never ungrateful for help. I actually managed to describe the process pretty precisely in layman's terms in a couple of short paragraphs, having now done it.

If anyone as thick as me does a search on how to do it now, they might now have an idea .

Good result Max, nice to know your stuff is where you decide it should be, and not controlled by G or MS.

I've used SMSBackup+ by Jan Berkel in the past - it backed all the SMS up to the GMail account and then to whichever phone was wanted. Alternatively if both phones are new enough, Samsung to SmartSwitch that can be installed on both and used to transfer a lot of information directly between the phones.

On my own, it backs up automatically to my MS account and restores automatically on setting up
