Helping The Aged so we can keep in touch?

A family member of ours who lives some distance from us was wondering if having a tablet would be a good way to keep in touch with us?

She is 91 next birthday, and I have told her that I would ask the Techie' guys on AO if she would be able to use one without having a router installed?

I believe my 83 yr.old sister uses one without a router, so I guess she must live in an area termed a 'Hot Spot', would that be correct?

You can get one with a 3G/4G SIM that uses a mobile data connection but I've no idea how effective they are or how much their data will cost

Before getting into the technicalities of connection I think we should consider what is meant by staying in touch.

Presumably phone is the primary method today. So voice communication.

A tablet could enable:

Email
Social networks - Facebook, AO etc.
Video call

Is this what your relative is looking for? Does she currently use email and social networks? If not then it may add nothing. Video calling is overrated so I tend to ignore that.

Facetime is never as good as the adverts suggest. Your relly will be wondering why you keep turning into coloured blocks and probably call the police. If you understand the technology, you just know what it is doing, but if you don't, a flaky connection can be weird.

If their house has a really good 3G signal, then one with a mobile contract will do the job - but 30 a month or so.

As to type - an s/h iPad is a good idea because they just work, android is occasionally weird and you don't want weird. Get the last generation device, not something ancient. My mother (who is the most computer phobic person on the planet) can drive an iPad reasonably easily.

As above, all this gives you is facetime and internet connections. Not sure if this is what you really want.

Gentlemen, thank you very much.

The lady in question was a maths teacher during her working life at Uni' level, but has never ventured into the modern realms of technology, and as I am ignorant of so many of its aspects I felt ill advised to even attempt to direct her?

100up, we would just require being able to communicate more broadly than just by using a phone.
We would like to be able to send her pictures of our ever expanding family, mainly because she has no remaining lilving members of her own, and as she has never visited our home pictures of that too.

She was a competent pianist throughout her life, and with regard to that physical aspect has still reasonable mobility with her fingers and hands.

Once again thankyou for your advice, I shall accordingly convey that to her in due course. :

Zed, do you have a tablet, if so, firstly why not take it round to her house to see if there is suitable connection?

You can then show your family member the pictures of the house / other relatives etc. while at the same time, she will be able to see how it works.

Sounds like a good idea so I may consider that if and when I can get my son to bring his with him when he visits in a week or two. Good suggestion, thanks. :
