Rio Carbon Pearl MP3 player...

Look what I found at the back of my wardrobe.

As title, bought from Comet in the '90s I think. Cost me 100 and has travelled the world with me.

Hoping it charges ok

That's later than the 90s though.

Amazon.com : Rio Carbon Pearl 5 GB MP3 Player : MP3 Players & Accessories

My 1st one was a Thomson/RCA Lyra which ran on AA batteries
and used CF cards.

The 2nd one is still in the desk drawer and runs off a single AA:

Even had a line in to do MP3 Encoding. (Which is why I kept it. )

I thought it was 1 gb but Nevs research shows 5.

I'll have a look at the packaging if I can find it, it's charging ok.

Yep your right, 2004, would never have thought.

I've found several other cheap players that are really USB sticks with a basic screen.

I have a very early stand alone digitiser. It's in a box somewhere and I can't remember it's name off hand. It's about the size of a portable HD (3.5 inch one). At one end are 2 x RCA sockets and at the other is a USB socket. You connected it to a line out and plugged a USB stick in and then pressed a button to set the encoding rate and it would record your line level output to MP3. Great idea but bloody useless in reality as it would record a whole album as a single MP3 leaving you the job of splitting and tagging etc on a PC which with the correct cable could do the job just as well anyway.
