I played them not in 1993, but more like 1995-1996. PCs weren't that easily available then (too few, too expensive)

I never really touched a PC until 2000: They were for accountants.

yep, I was a night guard (while being a student) and spend nights playing on accounting PC
and then I went to be an estate agent (kind of, again while being a student) and... spend some nights playing on PC, when not typing my course works...

We played network Doom on NeXT workstations in 1995. Playing videogames on PCs was strange enough, but networked play was something else. There was a Sun E1000 server holding it all together. We were testing overnight batch processing, which involved about an hour of work, then 7 hours of total boredom watching it run through.

By the end of that project we had the level editor running, and had built a very good facsimile of the office, complete with lifts and security guards at reception - we had them as those brown fireball throwing things.

network Doom in 1995. I bet it was a rocket science for most at that time.

Games we played at work in the late 90s were xtank and xtrek which were both multiplayer 2d overhead
view shooter games.

The Total War games are excellent. But they're probably not a good choice for your first foray - very complex.

I'm trying to think what I'd suggest that's a good entry point. Maybe a Tower Defence type like Defense Grid? Probably get that pretty cheap too.

X-Com: Enemy Unknown is excellent, and relatively simple (albeit certainly not easy) it's especially well polished with the Enemy Within expansion.

This whole strategy and collaboration guff leaves me cold. Me and the BFG against the alien horde. From the clip posted, it does rather look as though the semi auto shot gun remains the weapon of choice.

I am seriously hooked on Fallout 3 and this is as far as a 'strategy' game does for me (although I enjoyed playing Red Alert 2)

Have 'Rush' but not hooked yet

Disagree, there is nothing complex about total war games. you basically have a campaign Map that you make choices in how you want to develop your faction and expand by destroying other factions or ally with others to take over larger factions.

Been playing these for years and I have nephews who are 11 & 12 year olds who can play these games with no problems.
