What tablet?

My Nexus 7 has become increasingly annoying. It is now excruciatingly slow, and rather unreliable too. I've done a full reset, and it's helped a little, but not much. Built in obsolescence?

My work has just given me a 250 reward (for general greatness ) so I'm wondering whether this is the time to consign the Nexus to the scrap heap. I'm looking forward to our planned holiday in June, and thinking about how enraged I'm going to be when trying to use the tablet to look up a restaurant and getting nowhere fast.

So, to the question. What tablet should I be getting? Either for that 250, or I guess a little more and I can top up the money. Preferably one which won't become a brick 2 years later like the Nexus has.

I think I'd probably prefer to stay with Android, since it allows me to download a load of games from Humble Bundles.

Asus is top of my list these days but the Nexus 7 was an Asus....

Kindles are pretty damn bomb-proof/cheap but you are stuck in Amazon's
garden for the most part.

What do you actually want it for?

Along with a full reset on your N-7 have you tried not re-installing
all the apps? Just the ones you really use.
You can check (vias Settings->Battery) which apps are running/using power a lot
and ditch them if you don't really need them. Which should improve memory usage/speed
and battery life.

I bought a Lenovo Yoga 2 and, until recently I would have advised you to avoid like the proverbial. It would regularly crash, wouldn't wake up and other annoying things. Then two weeks ago there was a firmware update and now it works perfectly and I love it. Good screen, great sound, fabulous battery life and the built in stand is really useful. The disadvantages are that the Atom processor isn't a screamer, there isn't a Lollypop update available (yet?) and the bulge sometimes makes it awkward to use in portrait. If you do get one then replace the Lenovo launcher with something better like Google Now.

What do you guys reckon about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite VE T113, Display 7.0"? Offered for €85 here and figured it should work fine for internet browsing (which is the only thing I’d use it for). Thoughts?

I have had someone recommend the Galaxy Tab family in general.

85 euros seems exceptionally cheap. Old stock?

Seems a little more expensive in the UK. Could be old stock churned out by Amazon (20% discount).

Other research seems to put the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 as a very good possibility.

I think more 'going rate' by comparison. But it's a lot of money, I agree.

The xperia z3 tablets are very, very good and have dropped in price a bit. I too have a nexus 7 that has become little more than a light up paperweight. Shame, because it WAS excellent until lollipop update.

That Yoga does look interesting, but I don't think I'd get on with the bolbby integrated stand thing!

How does Lollipop relate to Kitkat? Because that Galaxy Tab thingy is on Kitkat - there a risk it will be similarly bricked if and when an update happens?

Lollipop is the new android running version (they're alphabetical!).
Kit kat ran perfectly on the nexus but lollipop has left thousands of people with an almost pointless piece of kit.
Lollipop was early onto the nexus as it's a google product and updates etc are tested on there prior to releasing across the market.

We still have an old Blackberry Playbook. Now that is built like a tank. Unfortunately it's not that rapid. Having said that, we'll keep it for playing back videos mostly as it's got a good screen, and occasionally checking e-mails.

I suspect you'll find it a step backwards from your Nexus 7, even if it was the first generation.

Don't have a Nexus 7 mate. Got nothing now after the kids broke the iPad for the third and final time
