Smart watches

As is my way, I have destroyed my current watch - dropping it face first on to the floor of a squash court.

When thinking about what I wanted from a watch, I realised that all the possible extra functions - timer, compass, etc, are now completely un-needed, as they are supplied by my phone.

And that made me think that what would be useful was a connection with my phone, since I regularly fail to notice it ringing. Doesn't need to be all singing and dancing - but if the watch vibrates on my wrist when the phone rings, that'd be handy.

Also, because of my aforementioned ability to destroy watches, waterproof, tough, and cheap would be nice qualities.

So what's out there that's not naff? Any personal experience? (Needs to be iPhone compatible.

Supplemental question - if a bluetooth watch is paired with my phone, and I get in the car and press the pair button on the Nokia handsfree in there, will it override the watch? Or will wearing the watch render the car bluetooth useless?

This is rather nice:
Citizen AT7030-05E Eco-Drive Gents Proximity Bluetooth Chronograph Watch

But 300 is a lot for something I'll scratch getting out of the box.

This avant garde bloke looked like one of the first to try a smart watch:

But in the end the battery life just made it impracticable.

That Citizen (and some G-Shock ones) claim a 1 year battery life, rather than things like the pebble which manage 1 week.

Bluetooth will handle multiple connections concurrently.

... if implemented and you (can) switch off the Bluetooth power saving mode.

That thread reads oddly like a 4C ownership thread...

I'm strongly considering the Pebble Steel now. What's really got me tempted is seeing that you can get screen protectors for it - which covers my distressing habit of scratching every nice watch I dare buy within days of getting them.

I've got the first Pebble. It's really handy at work or in winter for reading emails and texts and notifying you of a call when the phone is in a coat pocket or can't be heard or is silent. The only downside is that if you read a txt message on the watch the phone doesn't recognise you've done it so the iPhone notifies you again.

I get around a week on a charge. I do find using the watch increases battery usage on the phone.

I can confirm that my iPhone 5 will talk to both my watch and my Pioneer car radio.

The plastic one I have does appear to be scratched easily.

I don't really use many of the applications though, I've usually got my phone with me anyway.

Oh - I bought a Pebble Steel. Very pleased with it. I often miss calls and texts because I don't feel / hear my phone, so the notification vibration on my wrist is great.

I suspect it will be much more expensive. I also expect it will be very highly specified - and therefore have a minuscule battery life.

All of the smart watch makers so far (except for Pebble) seem to be forgetting that the major function of the watch is still to be a watch.

It's relatively low spec (uses e-paper rather than a mini phone screen) and an open platform for app creators.

This means it has massively better battery life, and a huge amount of apps you can get for it. As a basic, it tells you when you get texts, calls and emails - and displays their details on your wrist. It can also show weather reports, news reports, RSS feeds. It can connect to your evernote account so you can display checklists on your watch and check them off. It can control the music your phone is playing too.
It can be used as a pedometer, and has loads of different fitness apps available.
It can display a map of your location, or turn by turn directions using your phone's GPS.
It vibrates if your phone goes out of bluetooth range, reminding you if you've forgotten it (or someone has just nicked it!)

Oh. And it tells the time.

Bazza. Pretty sure amazon price match themselves 7 days, as long as bought directly from amazon. Give it a try.

The link now goes to pebbles site which links to Kickstarter. It took orders for $2m dollars in the first hour yesterday and is now approaching $8m.

Nothing Italian

I just got a Pebble Steel as well. Off eBay hardly used. In box as new for much less than retail. I like it atm. Good battery life and I can glance at mails to decide if I need to answer them or not.

I'm intrigued by the Nav function as I have sometimes used Google Nav on foot and this should be a neater solution.

I tried using PebbGPS in London yesterday and it didn't go very well. That said, I had a laptop bag over one shoulder and a flight case in the other hand, so I didn't have the ability to mess with it - sure I just hadn't set it right.

Well chuffed with it in every other way though.
