What in-car hi-fi?

Would appreciate some recommendations please.

Currently have a Pioneer CD/radio, purchased from Halfords nearly a year ago. It only cost about 75.00 (I think). The sound quality is okay but isn't great, as you would expect from a entry-level-type of player.

My budget will be around 150 (flexible) and I don't want sub woofers, but a bog standard CD/FM radio will suffice.

I've read that Alpine are good but the Halfords mob said they won't be any different to my Pioneer.

I know a lot about indoor hi-fis but not a clue about in-car stuff.

Suggestions please.

Very droll, Mr. Rosso.

As a V6 is more expensive, I'll plump for a better stereo.

Sniff round the Ice lounge.

I'd look at Pioneer, Alpine and Sony.

Yup, Alpine has appealed to me in the past. May have to give them another check.

Cheers, PP.

I think the guys at Halfords are correct. You generally just get more features at that price point on the HU. Have you considered changing the speakers?

Will changing the speakers give me a bigger uplift in sound?

I know from my indoor hi-fi the balance/synergy of sound is ideal.

Go to an ICE specialist and ask. There are still a few around.
I wouldn't expect there to be much if any difference in sound between something costing 95 and something costing 150 but I would expect more features.
An upgrade of a speaker costing 10 to one costing 50 on the overhand is all going to be in the sound. There are no features in a speaker.

Spoken to an ICE dealer fairly local to me, and yes, he said the biggest upgrade would be replacement speakers. Prices start from 100 for 4. Or, if I'm looking at a new CD/radio I would have to spend a lot more... he suggested Alpine 'CDA' range, start at 214.00.

I'll have to chew the fat over the weekend.

Thanks BGZ.
