iTunes: treating a USB drive as a 'device'

Can you get iTunes to do this? I have a 40GB drive attached to my car stereo, and I just copy the stuff across using windows explorer, but it might have some advantages to sync instead if it's possible.

No you can't sync via itunes. Are you talking Windows or Mac ? You can easily write scripts to do it but how depends on which OS.
Does the car stereo play m4a files or is everything MP3 ?

MP3, but that's what I have all my music ripped as anyway. I'll just carry on doing it with files then.

If your host is a PC then Microsoft have a useful free program called SyncToy. Search and download from MS. Designated the folders to sync and push the button. Quick and reliable.

I do use that for backing up, you're right it's excellent. But I don't want all the music, so wouldn't work for this application. Cheers for the idea though.

Install MediaMonkey and use that to sync your music to you hard drive. Leave iTunes in place if you have to. They can both access the tracks.

MediaMonkey » Free Media Jukebox, Music Manager, CD Ripper & Converter
