Spam email help

Hi all

I'm pretty careful not to open attachments etc but somehow there appears to be a trojan on my PC that is sending me hundreds of fake emails a day...

I've ran a couple of malware type programs that have detected threats and removed them, but this trojan is persistent...

Any suggestions folks?

TIA

O0fO !!

To be honest I've not run anything other than Microsoft's standard security in Windows
for the last few years.

You probably need to at least Identify the problem and the Google how to remove it.

Try a free trial of on of the AV products? Then uninstall after you've cleaned the PC.

Cheers TataCaNev , am running a deep scan by Emisoft at the mo, it already seems to have picked up more traces than other programs including more registry entries than I've seen before, fingers crossed

How are you sure that it's something on your PC which is generating the spam? Do you still get the spam if you check your email from a different machine? What do you mean by "fake emails"?

As Paddy says, are you sure it's your machine? Most spam emails sent from an infected machine are out bound to people in that machine's address book(s).

If you have a pet tech person close, get them to look at the email headers.

How to read headers depends on client
Nice little guide I found
How do I view email headers for a message?

You are looking for the first couple of Received headers - does the IP address match that of your PC or local host/127.0.0.1. If not there then it's coming from outside.

Post some info here and I'm sure one of us can have a look into it. At work we use Webroot amonst others, and they do a free 30 day trial. MS also have a safety scanner on their website. Run something like CCleaner and clear out those temp files (not virus removal per se) and uninstall any PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

And to avoid it happening again, train yourself to not look on dodgy sites (ok, just kidding on this one).
