Yosemite v WD My Book.

Updated the other week to Yosemite, no issues up until now.

Noticed Time Machine was not updating to my WD My Book. I went into the settings and the Book is asking for a password, I never set one, the only device I see now is a virtual CD drive in place of the 1T drive.

Been on the website and all I can get from WD is that my storage device does not support Yosemite and nothing can be done to unlock it.

In the bin it goes then, not be buying WD again, going for a drive that hopefully does not have its own fancy software installed, like my old Philips hard drive.

I love the way Apple changes stuff
and it's someone else's fault.

Same thing when B&M, UConnect
and JLR's system stop working
after an IOS upgrade.

With Mavericks there were a number of people with WD who had them formatted...

There are too many upgrade slaves about. Why would you want to upgrade. what benefits did you hope to achieve. What software do you use that required you to upgrade. I still use Snow Leopard. Got Mountain Lion on another SSD, just in case my mates have a problem, I can work it out for them. In fact I much prefer Os 9. In '94 when I got my first Mac it was on 8.5 that lasted 'til about 2000. If you bought the Mac to do a job then it will do that job that you intended it to do, when you change the equilibrium not always but something has to give. If you bought it as a status symbol then there is no harm done. After all it is a mac, just remember if a mac breaks it still looks great.

It's all down to cost.

Supporting multiple versions of software is very expensive, so booting
people off through "security alerts" and dropping support is actually
a cost cutting exercise for most SW companies.

I'm an upgrade "inquisitive" slave.who has learnt his lesson, won't be in a hurry to upgrade for the sake of it again.

Just bought a Seagate 1T drive from Amazon for half the price I paid for the WD.

Its happily partitioning ready to act as my Time Machine as I type.

To be fair I am too but I buy another hard drive to put it on, easy peasy like there's four hdd slots in my Mac Pro. so that's hdds for Leopard, Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion covered, Then one for my projects. Yosemite, not interested at the moment.
