Retro HiFi

Just inherited my dad's vinyl collection and Garrard deck so got it up and running with a Marantz amp from the late 70s I have and enjoying the warmth of vinyl for the first time in a while.

What's your retro setup?

Bonus points if you know the album

Technical :D it's old tech!

Just sold the last of it on eBay. A Yamaha CR200E reciever from the late 70's. Beautiful but unused so I thought someone else should have it.

Like yours GD, I do. I have a NAD record deck but also had a Project deck which I foolishly sold.
Somewhere at my Ex's there is an Optonica record deck.

I still use a Trio KD1033B deck that I bought in about 1974. It and a Pioneer PL ?? were considered the best belt driven decks of the time. Mine has an upgraded mat and an Ortofon VMS20E cartridge. I also have a recent Technics clone deck that I use a bit more regularly.

In the loft I have an Akai reel to reel tape recorder. I have no use for it so no idea why I don't flog it or chuck it.

EDIT. Just looked on Ebay. They (4000D) go for about 100

Pioneer 112D, with a Shure M75ED.

I hankered after this set up for many a teenage year. Never got it though. Pioneer brought out the significantly worse PL512 just as I had money, and so I ended up with one of those instead.

Really like the Project turntables, i'm in the process of redecorating a room to turn it in to a sitting/listening room, thinking of getting a Ruark R7 and getting a project deck to go with it.

Mine is actually a Mk2 since you mention it. I had to get a new stylus recently. Cheapest OEM I could find in Europe was way over 100. I got a mate in USA to get me an original Ortofon one for about 30.

I was going to suggest that .

But in actual fact, all you would have known was that it was an MCA recording...which, for men 'of a certain age, driving an Alfa', might possibly suggest Wishbone Ash .

Some might argue, that it isn't really a Garrard deck, unless it's an SP25 MkIV .

PL12...D!

Was that 'D' for Direct Drive? Can't remember! I had one though!

But the best ever...and all the hype was TRUE...was a Linn Sondek LP12. Magnificent!

I used to have ears like a bat and my hi-fi came alive when I got one of those .

I currently have a Technics SL-1800 deck with Ortofon LM30 cartridge, Rotel RA612 amp, Rotel RE700 equaliser and Celestion Ditton 44 speakers. Sounds awesome. I'd put a photo up but I've filled some quota apparently. Bluetooth adaptor plugged into the auxiliary input to bring it into the modern world too :-)

I'm not sure what model it is, it looks exactly the same as a DD450 from pics I've seen online except its black instead of silver and the machining of the tone arm and cradle is superior to the rough turned alloy ring on the DD450.

Has no model number anywhere on it. The chassis is rather plasticky but it has very well sprung feet and everything works which aint bad considering its 35 yrs old, my dad bought it new when I was a kid along with the Marantz Integrated Amp, I've got some more Marantz stuff coming, a 20 band eq in champagne gold and another integrated amplifier also in champers.

Confessions of a hifiholic...

I'm new to Alfas but have been messing about with hifi for a few years. I think you could say I've got it pretty bad actually

Most of my kit was made in the '90s so is getting on a bit even if I struggle to think of it as really "retro". Older than that, I have a Technics SP10 turntable (project, still working on the plinth), a pair of Snell C, pair of Rogers LS6, pair of repro Tannoy R-GRFs with '70s HPD drivers. I've had all sorts of other stuff too over the years. Need to figure out how to post pics on this forum!

I always wanted a reel to reel tape deck. Just liked the way they looked with the twin VU meters My pal's dad had one as he was a classical music listener. It did sound good compared to my hissing Sharp tape deck

Sounds nice. At some point over the next few years when I get around to the conservatory that will be the listening room. Currently the spare room upstairs houses my Tannoy speakers NAD amplifier and Denon tuner, Arcam iPod dock (annoying now as only my old iPad has the connector, oh and a gen 1 iPod I use in the car) and Denon CD player. The record deck is away as there is no room.
We have a early noughties Yamaha receiver in the lounge with Mission speakers which is also surround sound.
I wanted to use the old Yamaha receiver but it was silver and we had to have black.

I'm not going anywhere, I'm just going.
Statements above are all my own opinion and not fact.

My pops has one of these up in the attic somewhere:

Used to play around with it a lot as a kid.

It has a transparent lid and also a set of plastic speakers that locked together
to form a travel lid.

  • 2-track Teac Reel to Reel - the big ones
  • Thorens belt driven TD whatever with an Ortofon MM element
  • Cyrus 1 amp
  • Cyrus tuner
  • pair of B&W stand mounters

Listen to that set once in while. Like the sound of the old analog LP's...

It not nearly as old as me.

I recognised the wishbone shaped guitar, but it's not an album I'm familiar with, but along with the rainbow MCA label on the record I knew it was a Wishbone album.

'Cos even when you click on the photo it's too small to see the name of the artist and album on the label!

I've just noticed the giveaway though...the model Gibson Flying 'V' guitar next to the hi-fi. That's the guitar Andy Powell used to play, n'est ce pas?

Just seen this post. It's a Gibson Flying 'V'. Yes, I guess it is kind of wishbone-shaped? Other guitarists used this guitar too, but it was kind of Andy Powell's 'signature' guitar.
