Recommended pieces of music to make a ringtone from

I don't know how other phones do their ringtones, but the iPhones have a limit of 40 seconds length, so rather than just picking a full song, you have to pick a section. This actually works well(ish) for me, as I dislike vocals in a ringtone, so allows me to grab a good instrumental break. Frustrating when the perfect 'phrase' as 41 seconds long though!

Anyway, assuming that anyone else makes their own ringtones - share songs you've found make a really good one.

Here are some starters.

Proppellorheads - On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
This song is 9 minutes long and entirely instrumental - there are so many bits of it that you could choose for a ringtone. I went for the crescendo of the very orchestral bit at around 5:50 though.

Queens of the Stone Age - You say I ain't worth a dollar but I feel like a millionaire

Picking the point at which the slow start suddenyl explodes. Around 42 seconds in.

Both of the suggestions so far have the advantage that they start off pretty soft, so if you're in a place where your phone ringing is socially awkward, you can pick them up while it's still very quiet.

Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love

Such a massive tune. But really struggled to find anything long enough without vocals. In the end, had to resort to using the C.C.S version, and just going from the very start works a charm.

Anita Ward "Ring My Bell"

Blondie "Call Me"

South Park "Uncle Fukka"

Personally i can't stand musical ringtones.

So:

Cisco's(?) ringtone from"24"

The Our Man Flint ringtone or the Austin Powers
parody of it.

I've had Yakety Sax as my ring tone for years. It often brings a smile to people round me when my phone rings

Irritatingly, iPhones don't allow you to have a custom text tone.

I use the Ultimate Warrior's entrance music as sound clip for incoming calls. Except for the wife's number which has a special ringtone ... guess which one?

Slightly off topic

OK, How do you select a ringtone from the music on your iPhone? I know it was easy on my Nokia and an Android but have not worked it out on the iPhone.

I could do Googley Interweb stuff but it seems at least Bazza knows right here and right now (or when he comes back to read this)

Edit & stop press: OK I asked my mate at work. In essence iTunes and convert it to a %^&*£$ format

The last time I had a musical ringtone, it was the first 30 seconds of "Rocky Took a Lover", by Bell X1: ( Bell X1 - Rocky Took a Lover music video on MUZU )

For the last seven years or so, it's been a good old-fashioned "ring-ring" (a recording of a Post Office Model 706 telephone, to be precise).

Yeah, it's not terribly complicated, but it sounds it.

Basically cut the song down to the 40 secs or less you need (using 'get info' and options to choose start end end points), make an AAC version of it, find the file and rename it to .m4r, then import that file back in to iTunes.
