OK, just been on a VERY long chat with Apple support. She was really helpful, and quite fun actually too - so points to Apple for that.
It's sort of fixed...
We logged both phones off their apple ID and back on.
Text messages are now working fine. Except iMessages, when we're on wifi, are now a bit flaky. They were working fine before! Suspect though it's either because iMessage was still resetting itself on Mrs Bazza's phone, or signal here is a little weak. Will try it again once we're home and I know signal won't be to blame. They're going to call me back tomorrow to see if problem continues.
