Not the hard disk
Not so much as a discussion topic but rather a heads-up which may help someone.
My father-in-law connected his external desktop hard disk only to be greeted by "drive not recognised"
He brought it over to me and I tried it on my surface - nothing. Tried it on the laptop - nothing. Ear to the unit to hear a very soft squeak....
I connected the disk onto a spare SATA cable within a desktop PC and was able to copy all the files off no problem. So whilst initially I feared a hard disk failure it was simply the power supply to the disk.
Needless to say my father -in-law is now insisting on having a backup of his backup.
SO - either have two external hard drives - or use the cloud....
