iphone4 unlock

mate at work mrs washed her phone and got a second hand one off ebay, he wants me to make it so she can use her current sim/provider.
i though yeah i'll have a go at it, even though i know nothing of apple or their products.
i know it's an iphone 4 but it wont connect to itunes cuz it says it has a mis matched sim to the provider. so i've no idea how to find out what o/s it's got on it, so i can jailbreak it.
any help would be gladly appreciated.

Think you have to get the original owner to contact the network its on and request it to be unlocked by apple then connect to iTunes to complete.
That's what I had to do with an iPhone 3GS.

I also had issues unlocking an iphone 4. Tried doing it "diy" with no success, then sent it away to a company who said they could do it, but they couldn't (and am still fighting for my refund - thieves), in the end the previous owner had to contact 02 to unlock it. It was done for free in about 48hrs. So my advice is if you know the previous owner, try and go down this route first.

If it has latest iOS on it and the previous owner setup find my iphone you might be screwed as it cannot be factory reset without removing the find my iphone security.

Why did you want to jailbreak it?
