At the moment there aren't any known attacks in the wild for the older versions of IE so the risk is currently regarded as low on XP. Microsoft have released a workaround which unregisters a dll and will protect you. It disables a feature depracated in IE 9, something to do with graphics files which displays images using a series of mathematical formulae in the file.

There are now attacks in the wild for XP and older versions of XP so this update would be advisable.
