Thumbs Up Solar Technology

Looks like someone is doing some innovation:

Solar energy: Stacking the deck | The Economist

Maybe one day they'll have panels that don't require a massive subsidy
from poor people and will generate more energy than is used to produce them
over their short working lifetime.

(For sure they'll never be able to make them without using some nasty pollutants
and toxins but heigh-ho! )

I wouldn't have the current ones on my roof on the grounds that they are pig ugly. Should be banned IMO. A blight on the landscape.

Also, bit like planting a "I'm a tight arsed eco warrior & proud" flag on your roof

I've got 7 panels in a line on the roof - they look ok imo. The return is OK too. I am not particularly green or tight arsed - although I guess Simon would take a lot of convincing of this.

Current technology solar PV panels are not about being green/tight.

It's about hoovering up money from poor people that has been
made possible through artificially inflated feed-in tariffs.

I guess it's one of those situations where you go through the ridiculous stuff to get where you want to be?

We do need to be more aware of the planet and our effect on it (for our own good as much as anything else) and we do need to come up with alternative energy solutions. There'll be a lot of crap before we come up with something meaningful and tangible, but we must explore all the avenues.

And even forgetting the green-welly stuff and being purely pragmatic and logical for a moment, you only have to look at what's happening in Ukraine to see that our gas supplies (from Russia) are fragile to say the least. If they turned the tap to 'off', we're stuffed. I wouldn't trust Putin as far as I could throw him. His eyes are too close together and he has those Slavic cheekbones.
