Replacing my stolen smartphone

I haven't got time to go into detail here, but some twonk nicked my Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini from the local Wetherspoons at lunchtime a couple of weeks ago. The guy was caught on CCTV and has been nicked, but the phone is gone forever. For various reasons I didn't have insurance so I have to buy myself a new phone out of my own pocket, and carry on with the rest of my 2-yr Virgin contract.

I can buy a direct replacement Samsung for £209 from Virgin, but I've noticed that I can get a Grade A reconditioned iPhone 4S off ebay for £200. All the (plentiful) feedback says they're virtually as good as new, 'ethically' unlocked and iCloud-capable etc.

Or I guess there are other options and other phones to be had.

Thoughts?

Have you considered the Nexus 5?

I will now BF!

But after my foolishness in not insuring the last phone, I'm limiting myself to around the £200 mark.

Is it doable with a Nexus 5?

I think it's about £300 but on par with the iPhone 5S, so top piece of kit.

You were asking for it by going to a Wetherspoons?

I've been in the market for a new phone for years but there's nothing out there
that I feel like spending readies on.

If I was slab-phone oriented, I'd check out:

Asus Padphone Mini: Looks like a nice idea.

Wiko: if you're paying upfront yourself they are cheap.

I'd also start looking at Xiaomi's offerings.

The Wetherspoons local to work is a strange mix of us meeja-types, and the local mob, which does include a few dodgy scrotes as you might imagine. A moment's inattention on my part, and that was the end of that. The ****** is disputing it, but the CCTV shows he hasn't a leg to stand on, according to the local nick. It's been passed to the CPS and I'll probably get my day in court to make sure he eats some ****. Like his type actually give a ****!

Wetherspoons have been really good, they barred him immediately from any of their pubs and Faye - the duty manager who's been dealing with it - has offered to be a court witness in her own time. So when the scraggy little ******** goes down and he says he has no disposable income and can only pay me back 1p/fortnight, she can testify to his spending about £50 a week in there, every week. So hopefully the Judge will think he can do without his beloved beer for 4 weeks and bloody well pay me back!

I generally go in there once or twice a week, Curry Day on Thursday is a good one, a passable Tesco-type curry and a pint for £6

I have seen the S3 mini at around £140 plus VAT at one of my suppliers but can't think where now.

Why the bloody hell should you need to claim on insurance? You know who took it, why isn't the situation that he owes you the value of the phone?

Oh, he does Bazza, he'll have to pay me back. But as I stated earlier, he will no doubt come up with some **** and bull story about he has no disposable income and it will take him 2 years to pay me back in 1p coins. But if he spends £50 a week on beer, that's bull**** of course!

We'll see what the court makes of it.

Another vote for the nexus 5 if you can stretch to it, I have the previous nexus 4 and it's a great bit of kit. Best of all being vanilla android with no samsung/htc etc b******ization you get all the OS updates as soon as they are out.

I'd just get a reconditioned phone or, if not claiming on insurance but wanting new, check out something cheap and small - I'm just glad I've only once had a phone damage before I've wanted to replace it (this one!) but that was within an hour of owning it and 1 drop cracked the screen so informed them it was faulty as the manufacturer drop tests them multiple times from a greater height. Got an overnight replacement.

Well, after much deliberation, headscratching and internet-researching, I bought this:

Motorola Moto G 8GB SIM Free Deals | Phones 4u

Nice phone, cheap, performs well, excellent screen quality and has the latest Android 4.4 KitKat software. Better than my old Samsung S3 Mini which got nicked, and probably better than an iPhone 4S which I considered getting at one point (£200 for a grade-A reconditioned one on Fleabay).

Only 130 Squids - and the guy threw in a spare back for the phone, as well as a T-Mobile SIM (which he topped up with £10 for me) and which I can put in the cheap interim phone I've been using and give to a family member.

The new phone takes a micro-SIM, so I carefully trimmed the edges of my standard Virgin SIM down with a Stanley knife and it works a treat .

Pretty happy all in all.

The **** who nicked my phone has now eventually pleaded guilty ('cos the CPS told him they had damning CCTV footage of him nicking the phone so it was totally pointless not to) and he's up in court next Tuesday. I won't bother to go unless the police tell me he's changed his plea. Looking forward to getting my bloody money back, although no doubt he will plead poverty and want to pay back 2p a month .

Did you get the old phone blacklisted?

Moto is meant to be a good choice for the price.

Aside: Google have just sold them to Lenovo

Oh yes Nev, phone and SIM blacklisted within 30mins of being nicked!

Yup, lots of very good reviews. I've already backed up all my contacts as I rebuild the list, the phone automatically syncs with a gmail account I set up (yes I know, that in itself is not particularly groundbreaking, but it's the 1st time I've done it).

One small annoyance is that I can't seem to use an old UK ringtone I loaded onto the phone, as the ringtone for it. I seem only able to use from the (crappy) Motorola ringtones list already in the phone.

Any ideas on how to go about this? It's not an Androidism, I managed it on my nicked Samsung.

Oh, and another thing...can I get an App that will allow me to track my phone should it get mislaid/nicked again?

For the ringtone you juts need to find an MP3 you like and
set this as the ringtone. Any audiofile should work.

Google have already implemented the tracking/remote wipe:

On your phone:

Select the Google Settings App Then select: Android Device Manager
and enable the features you want.

Then from a PC go to play.google.com

Top tight of the page is the gear_cog settings.
Click on that and select "Android Device Manager"

et Voila!

Or there is even a app to use on other android devices as well as the webpage
from a PC. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...droid.apps.adm)

Brilliant, thanks Nev .

My device locates to within 24m (although this can vary). If only I'd set this up on my previous phone... . But hey, I've ended up with a better phone, which hopefully will be paid for by the scrote that nicked the old one!

Re: the ringtone, yes, I've already put my desired mp3 file into the phone (nice, plain old UK ring-ring), but I can't see how to set it as my ringtone? If I open up a picture in my gallery I can get the option to use it as my wallpaper or whatever, but I'm not getting the option to set a soundfile as my ringtone.

I think you probably need to do it in the opposite direction. Rather than finding the file and asking to use it as a ringtone, you need to go into your ringtone settings and then pick the file.

Probably something like settings - sounds - ringtones.
