iPhone upgrade options

I currently have an iPhone 4 16GB, on which I pay £16.80 a month for unlimited calls and texts, and 1GB data.

Vodafone have just rung me to say I'm due an upgrade, and offered me:

An iPhone 5c 32GB with the same deal except for unlimited data too. £29.50 a month, and a £19 upfront cost for the handset.

What do people think? I was strongly expecting to fob him off, but that actually sounds like a good deal to me. I'm very interested to upgrade to 32GB so I can fit more music on the phone. And my iPhone 4 has been narking me off with how slowly it downloads stuff over data.

Oh - I can also choose to have a 4G contract instead for an extra £5. But I don't think the coverage in the North West is worth it, can anyone confirm?

And, last question, if I could wangle a 5s instead, how much more would it be worth to me? Is it a lot better than the 5c?

You do know the "c" on iPhone 5c is for "CheapSkate".

I wouldn't touch one, sales have been worse than dismal, hence the discounting.

Do you get international calls included too for that price?

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it. Wouldn't need them anyway.

The 5s 16GB was same price, but £33.60 per month instead of £29.60 for the 5c.

When I asked about the 5c 32GB, he matched the price of the 16GB version. Don't know whether he'd do the same for the 5s 32GB though (match the 5s 16GB price). If he will, I reckon that'll sell it to me.

I've just spent a while on the phone to an iPhone user trying to help them attach multiple pictures to an e-mail... What a fiddly faff! On my phone you just click the paperclip... Much easier than flicking and swooshing and pressing.

MY daughter has just got the 5C in yellow and she loves it. Looks a bit girly for me though. 5S has finger print recognition and looks a bit more professional/ grown up but is more expensive.

Looking at Vodafone's website, now it's working again, it appears that what he's offered me as an upgrade is actually no different to a new contract with them anyway. So there doesn't seem any motivation to rush into it (or give him any commission for bagging me).

Come the 24th, my website account unlocks for looking at upgrades, reckon I'll wait until then and see what the offers are like.

If you buy an iPhone 5C people can see it is made of cheap coloured plastic and people will shun you as though you have bought your fruit from the market rather than the swanky green grocers.

To me though that does seem like they are just trying to switch you to a more expensive tariff. I got fed up with over priced contracts and went for a SIM only deal. Not being an apple fan I just bought a Google Nexus4 off contract as they were under £300. Unlimited data sounds tempting but how much do you use? When I got the SIM only deal I upped to 2Gb, I find myself downloading a lot more on my commute including podcasts of upto 50Mb and have only used a max of 800Mb.

I would put up with a more expensive tarriff (to a point) to get a newer, quicker phone.

Otherwise, I agree entirely with what you say.

That's why I asked how big a difference people thought I'd see between my current phone and the 5s.

I have 6GB of data a month and using the phone for personal
and work email and streaming radio with the occasional audiobook download:
I have never used more than 1G in any month.
(And that includes use of a 2nd SIM for data on a 3G USB key that
is occasionally used for work Citrix sessions.)

And even if I did hit 6GB the plan drops to EDGE speed.
It doesn't cut you off from the internet.

Unlimited voice calls to fixed and mobile worldwide
is more useful to me.

Go to a service-only tariff instead and save another couple of quid.

And while you're at it, ask for the network unlocking code for your current phone: Now that your contract has completed, VF have no hold on the phone handset anymore. This will let you shop around for better service charges.

The 5s has a faster processor than the 5c which is very similar to a 4s.
If you have a 4 you will notice the difference. I assume you are on Vodafone as there is little else coverage wise where (I think) you work. 4g is not due in these parts for 18 months. Waste of cash at this stage but 5s is compatible.

Yep, you're quite right about vodafone.

As it turns out, the offer the fella was giving me is no different to what I can get by just going on the website myself, so there's no rush!
