Time for a new phone, your help is required

I need it to
  • Have a camera
  • Internet - BBC Sport and facebook are a must.
  • Have a slidey out keyboard. While I can cope with a touchscreen for the various apps etc, I do not want to make the leap to a 100% touchscreen keyboard (I don't know why) so something with a slidey out keyboard really is a dealbreaker for me. I realise that this somewhat limits what I can get.

Nice to have
  • Some sort of media player: FM / BBC Digital Radio stations.
  • Access to other stuff like youtube / AO, that the current phone doesn't do very well, then that's a bonus
  • Access e-mail, I have it on the Blackberry but it asked me to renew / verify something and I didn't, so the e-mail stopped and I don't miss it.

Things I am not sure about / don't want:
  • Operating system, erm, it probably has to be basic. I tried a Sony Experia Mini Pro once and it lasted for all of 3 days until I took it back - I didn't like the idea of having to download an "app" to be able to forward on a text message
  • I don't play games but it might be a bonus to have something as I have nephews and nieces are at that age where they like to play these things.
  • Another Blackberry. the current phone is a Blackberry Pearl, I have had it for about three years and I will not be having another, they are for businessmen. I am not a businessman. Before that I had a couple of Nokias. I liked them, they were logical.
I look forward to the only response being a spammer joining and posting in this thread next week your recommendations.

Are you really sure you want a keyboard? It really does limit your possibilities

I am sure, otherwise I'd probably just go for an iPhone or something.

I've been on one or two websites and some offerings by LG and maybe HTC but just wanted to see other people's opinions.

I should maybe add that I am on a monthly deal with Virgin at the moment and from what I could see earlier, they don't offer a slidy phone / LG in their contracts but I could always change providers if they aren't able to help.

Alternatively, is there some sort of tech forum out there that might help me?

Your biggest problem is going to be wanting a slide-out keyboard... If you could handle a fixed one or were happy to bluetooth a keyboard then you'd be able to be more flexible.

HTC 7 Pro is the last phone I have used with a great slide-out keyboard but as you can tell, it's not a new phone...

Currently you're stuck with Blackberry or Blackberry style Samsung [email protected] or Nokia Asha phones that I'm aware of though others may be coming to market (I guess it depends if you want slide down or slide side...)

I'd need to do a little research I think... (I'm biased regarding what to get as a touchscreen if a decent camera is required - Nokia or Sony) though you'll also find that youtube access may be limited if Google are throwing an advertising-related hissy fit.

E-mail should (in theory) be a cinch on any decent smartphone or even a lower spec feature phone.

Thanks AP,

I think I would rather have a touchscreen phone than go back to Blackberry. The Nokia that preceded the Blackberry had one or two superior features to the Blackberry

I'll think on, maybe pop in to the Virgin shop and see what they have to say.

using Nokia 920
wife using Nokia 1020

all features apart form physical keyboard are there and both cameras are out of this world, just fantastic possibilities.

apart from that - real offline maps that can be used with GPS positioning only.

I found Windows 8 very straight forward and most of the main apps available.

I still use an Xperia Mini Pro. (App to fwd messages?!)

There aren't any new keyboard phones on the market.

So you're stuck with sourcing back stock
of old models or go for a Blackberry.

Motorola will hopefully have a Droid5 out this
year.

BlackBerry Q10. Fantastic phone. Simple to use. Proper keyboard. Does all the things you want plus lots more.

Shame you don't like Blackberry.

Cameras on BBerry aren't good though.

Wanting a "proper" keyboard in a current phone model will limit the choices to a couple of oddball Androids, none of which have good cameras. (a slide out keyboard and a decent camera are conflicting design goals... the keyboard reduces the usable thickness of the enclosure, and lens to sensor distance is the key to a good camera)

Try a Nokia 925... My wife has one, the camera is very good, and WindowsPhone has the best onscreen keyboard of any system.. good enough that you might get by without the real keys. You can also use it while wearing gloves... I mention this simply because it was freezing last night!

I am going to have to take a leap of faith and get a phone without a keyboard.

Phones can control tellies and AV equipment these days can't they, I quite like the idea of that.

Friends' Samsungs can do that. The feature was used once and never again.

When you're sitting watching the TV, you don't want a remote that you've got to unlock and then look down at just to turn up the sound or change channels.

They werent great on the older ones, but the one on the q10 is good and the Timeshift facility is just genius.

Samsung's WatchON TV guide-come-remote is really useful.
it's one of only things a work supplied S4 gets used for.
The app "anti lock" removes the need for annoying
slide unlocks.

I'd +1 the Windows Phone 8 keyboards (I'm also a Lumia 920 user) as being better than others I've tried (although everyone's experience can be different and the best advice is to try before you buy...)

The offline maps were a boon for us travelling the US and Canada and, although it doesn't have expandable memory on the 920 (not that it seems to have hindered Apple with their phones), I find the 32Gb space more than enough - having said that I don't really bother with music uploads to the phone.

Most phones will do most of what you want, but like with many things, you'll need to prioritise. If you can get past the keyboard then you should have a decent range of options - my old HTC 7 Pro still functions if you're desperate (think it's newer than the MDA) ;-)

I'm living better than I expected without the physical keyboard (I'd tried a couple of Android and iPhones before).

I went to close to your suggestion, yesterday I purchased a Nokia 625.

I was impressed that I was able to import almost all of my contacts (including notes associated with some of them) by using the bluetooth facility on both phones, even without the SIM in the Nokia and it only took about a minute

Then I tried inserting the (tiny) SIM card in the slot but managed to nearly lose it because I didn't use the widget that holds it in place . However it is now up and running

I am impressed with it so far, things like the local scout app(lication) are fantastic and it's already told me about some gigs I didn't know about.

As long as you don't need millions of flashlight apps, you made a good choice ;-)

New to smartphones and thinking of going back my thick phone.
The touch screen keyboard is a major pain, however we can talk to it ant it'll type!
It does not always understand or make sense of it tho.

Oh yeah, I would like one of those, although I haven't tested it in the dark yet.

Yep, mine's got the talking application as well. I haven't used it yet though - plenty of exploration to be done!

I also started a new contract, which will save me some money each month (about a tenner I think)
