iPhone 5S: excellent piece of kit

Santa brought me a nice new phone (upgraded from an ancient iPhone 3GS) and I must say itís a fantastic piece of kit. Decided not to use it in the gym as my run keeper (want to keep its shelf life as long as possible). Saved a lot of cash on it by buying it in Japan thanks to the weak JPY. Only feature I donít have is 4G which is not compatible with the network here in Italy but donít really care as I would have to pay another Ä10 a month for 4G which is not something Iíd be keen on anyway.

Cheers.

It's good to spend money on high tech consumer products!

I'm still stuck with my SonyEricsson Xperia Mini Pro into the 4th year now!

The longest I've ever had a phone!

I went from a 4s to 5s. 32gb to 64gb. The fingerprint reader struggles with my finger tips but other than that, loving it.

I guess anything is an upgrade TBH most phones have more features and functionality but battery life suffers!

Battery life so far is pretty good. My 3GS was really struggling with that after 4.5 years.

What's "pretty good" in real-terms? With my own phone I'll get anywhere between 1 and 4 days out of it depending on what functions I enable/disable and how long I spend texting/phoning/app using etc.

Well I'm not so happy with my 5s and it seems a lot of others are too when I read up about it. Specifically dropping calls, loss of sound whilst making calls. Phone randomly shuts web pages while you are browsing them taking you to the home menu but on return page has gone. Phone also shuts apps while you are using them too. I like the phone but TBH IOS 6 and the 4S were far more stable and robust IMO.

Might stick with my 4s then.

One thing i dont understand about Iphones(had one before) is why they dont change!!! Since my iphone 3GS nothing much about the looks has changed. No glossy red, no glossy yellow, no 4.7 inch sizes, transperent would be nice, no new design really!!! They are still boring black square looking things. Thats why i changed. Now that Steve Jobs is gone that company is going downhill. Evan the imac is that boring silver flat thing. I think phones should look more like the Fiat 500 dashboards

Fixed that for you

I actually like that the Windows Phone setup (and I know I'm biased!) is different from Android and iOS. They haven't changed it a lot because that's what the customers generally want, though they may need to at some point...

Scratch easily and squeak a lot?

The days of innovation in the mobile phone market are sadly over.

The choice is which medium-to-large sized slab do you want to hold to your head.

No keys to enter text, no buttons to quickly/easily pick-up/hang-up.
and a standby measured in hours, not days or weeks.

Sad if you look back on what used to be available.

The 2nd decade of the 21st has been a major disappointment of mobile tech for me.

I do miss the slide out keyboard on my HTC 7 Pro... I like the idea of a snap-on bluetooth/nfc keyboard similar to the Windows Surface so you can attach for extended use if required but carry separately if required (a detached bluetooth one isn't always that convenient and I don't mind a bit extra weight.

[Hell getting chilly] ... still waiting for a slider keyboard phone. [/hell getting chilly]

next one due is the 'Droid 5 but I'm betting that'll be a Verizon-only US phone.

[sigh]

Me either. Battery life same too unless on the road without a charger. GPS & web usage kill the battery.

I just got the 5 and the problem it's having is shutting down when I'm outside. Not that cold here either, just 6C. I've looked it all up and it's been a problem since the 5 came out.
My 4 was fine, never did much wrong, I gave it to my daughter.
I wanted the upgrade because the camera is better and it is faster.

Maybe the battery? I can get a new one for $10 and switch it. Otherwise the battery is fine, holds the charge for a couple of days.

If you want glossy yellow and other colours then your looking at the 5C. Daughters got one and she loves it. It's a bit cheaper too.
