Updates

Why do computers and consoles need so many damned updates?

I turned my PS3 on last night for the first time in a while, tried to run love film, can't do it till the system software is updated. Update that, restart, now the Lovefilm app needs an update. Did that. 15 minutes later, I can use my device with no noticeable changes . Today, I noticed the big SALE banner in the shop. That needs an update to work.

Then to cap it off, turned on laptop, Adobe Reader needed another update.

WHY! What are the possibly doing that needs so many updates?

Grrrr.

Had one on the xbox to install apps without even asking for consent.

Part of life these days so I try planning for it. If friends are coming round I check stuff the night before where possible.

The majority of Windows updates seem to be security-related.

Most updates are bug fixes or additional functionality or security updates.

There may well be features in any software that you do not use that other people do and those features are failing and require an update.

My Xbox 360 insisted on spending 45 minutes doing updates the other day when I first switched it on. By the time it had finished I had lost the desire to use it and turned it off. I only wanted to have a quick bit of game play. I'm seriously considering get rid of it.

That's one area the Windows updates are more palatable... They (generally) download in the background and install when restarting or closing down - just check for the auto restarts if usually sleeping the machine like I do.

PS3 seems to not be too bad for updates - and I usually check when I remember just in case. It's the game updates that appear as trying to load up. Fortunately I don't play 1000's of games so there's not too much time between playing each one. The only annoying part is that failing to update generally blocks you off PSN but it doesn't stop off-line gaming

It's just a pity they leave so much junk on the hard disk. After every update I run AVG Quick Tune, which finds dozens of registry entries & hundreds of temporary files left over from the update.

With the PS3 the annoying bit is the 'You must update' bit. I don't want to. I want to turn it on, play a game and turn it off. The update will not change that as the game worked before the update.

At least with windows you can turn it off and it makes no difference.

I'd like the update thing to say what is going to change before the change.

Nothing Italian

Just transfer your game saves to a USB drive. I agree it is a pain but there are ways around.

Got GT6 for Chrimbo so I thought I would have a little game the other night. Popped in the disk and up came the update message - 1.2 gig. I reckon everyone else was downloading the update at the same time as I cancelled it when it got to over 1000 minutes estimated time to complete (with 0% downloaded). My broadband isn't the fastest but that was ridiculous. I ended up turning off the wireless connection and was able to have my quick game.

Started with a fat 60Gb but quickly switched to a 320Gb drive (easy enough to do) especially with PlayTV attached and recording stuff.
