ipad 2 or ipad air

so... santa's going to bring daughter no.1 an ipad for christmas, but he wants to know whether he's best getting an ipad 2, or for £70 more, a new ipad air

she'll be 10 in january so will use it constantly for playing minecraft, going on youtube, fannying about with pictures & videos, and facetiming her friends. apart from the minecraft she's not really a gamer so presumably super-duper-uber-graphics aren't a priority?

so any advice for santa?

My pick of the bunch would be an iPad mini retina. Don't go for the 2 whatever you do (I didn't even know they were still available, where would you be getting the 2 from?

The 2 has hugely outdated screen and chip technology, especially if she will be youtubing a lot. The air is good progress, the regular iPad is rather quite heavy.

Agree. Not the 2. Virtually obsolete. I'd opt for the Air if budget allows but the Mini retina is also good.

yep went for the air 16gb

she is indeed a very lucky young lady, but she very much understands that getting an ipad will be a biggie that won't be repeated in many christmases

Just asked nearly the same question!

Why the air over the retina model?

I read a few reviews that suggest the air has a yellow light glow/discolouration down one edge due to the positioning of the backlights. Is that true in actual use?

You get some old stock and recon units, but for the extra £20 or so, the air is worth it, for the decrease in weight alone!

Just order a grey 16Gb air from Amazon at £372.

The price is in total flux on Amazon.

Amazon and retailers alike tend to change prices when others have a promotion on. (Amazon have most likely done it to compete with Currys current cash back offer on tablets)

Yeah, I'm sure there will be other better deals here and there, but you've got to throw your oar in at some point.

They're dropping the prices of the older Retina display iPads which is what you might be thinking of. However, if you, I mean, Santa can stretch to it then get either the iPad Air or Mini Retina. Whilst your daughter might not be a gamer, the hardware improvements just means a better experience overall for her and no lag when running iOS7.

Honestly for a 10 year old, I would have got one of the cheaper android machines - they aren't as kewl, but they will do everything you have mentioned.

As the "keeper" of an 8 year old and an 11 year old, my prediction is that the screen will last about 6 months. For some reason girls seem to break screens by dropping things, boys wreck things by dropping them in the bath or similar.

My mum got herself an ipad air yesterday, huge improvement over my ipad 2 and you can definitely feel the weight difference. Going to get one myself as my ipad 2 belongs to work and they want it back.

Oddly, the 2 is a better matched set of bits than the 3 or 4 which is probably why they still sell them. I have a 3, but the graphics chip isn't really up to running the retina resolution display, where the 2 copes fine with the lower res. of it's screen. I went 2 to 3 and although I love the quality of the display, and the lighter weight was nice I did notice a drop in performance on some things - even stuff as simple as scrolling through a web page. Just not as smooth on the 3. Still on iOS 6 for this very reason.

Fancy an Air, but not got the spare cash for one at the moment.

I have had my ipad2 for 2 years and its absolutely faultless, i still think it cuts the mustard compared to other tablets out there apart from the air.

We are a two iPad 2 household . No issues . Only the obsessive children wanting to play mine craft and us remembering to charge the pads. The later connector seems more robust. Oh and I've heard the newer iPads are lighter.

The weight is definitely noticeable between the ipad2 and air.

And the performance difference too...made the "mistake" of showing my wife how such faster the Air is over the 2 with a side-by-side test. She's now lusting after getting an Air!
