Unreliable USB on my tv

Does anyone else have trouble with the USB port on their telly. The various memory sticks are of varying age and pedigree but the telly won't reliably play any of them. You get 30 mins in and it disconnects. Reconnect and it carries on for a bit then does the same.

is there a "power save" option on the TV for the USB ports ?

I don't think it's a power saving thing. Sometimes it works happily for an hour, others it's every ten minutes.

Telly is a toshiba, memory sticks are an assortment. I suspect slightly wonky connections in them to be honest as one works perfectly all the time. I'm going to pick up a new one tomorrow if I get chance.

We have a Toshiba telly too, and I have never managed to get the USB input to work either.

The telly doesn't even recognise the fact it is plugged in.

Have you tried a portable hard drive Keithy ?

My parents got an LG TV recently, I tried 3 different USB memory sticks & it wouldn't recognise any of them even after formatting.
It recognised a portable hard drive instantly plugged into the same port & there has been no problem recording to or watching content from it.

Do the sticks have to be formatted a certain way? Often best formatting FAT32 to get best compatibility, that does introduce file size limits though.

I think the thread is more than likely incorrectly titled.
It's more likely to be "unreliable TV with my USB" in reality but I agree with Ghosty - start with a freshly formatted USB stick FAT32.
My Samsung TV manual suggests you need a powered USB HD not a stick but as I have never tried it (why would you if you have Sky+) I don't know if that's true.

Its a good point, there are two types of USB port from a power perspective, low power ones don't have the power to power a device that requires higher power like external scanners, mechanical hard drives, thats why some external drives come with usb cables with two usb output leads attached, so you can double up two low power usb to get the same piwer output as high power.

Its not a rule of thumb but most high power usb ports have a symbol that looks like a lightning bolt to designate it being high power, more often found on laptops.

So getting the devices aligned with the port type and the filesystem on the storage would be first step, in other words RTFM

I have one memory stick that works perfectly on it. The others it works initially, then decides it has been disconnected.

I might invest in an external hard drive, they are cheap enough.

Transfer the movie from the dodgy stick to the good one...see if it works...if it does...bin the dodgy one.
