I was taken aback by this little beauty...

An absolute snip... Not sure how I'd use it but who cares when it's so beautiful. They even have to charge for postage because this are such good value.

We laugh, but even the "normal" priced ones area a joke:

TCi Cables Baby Constrictor mains power lead - 1m: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

100 quid for a mains cable. You'd have to be a moron to pay that.

Quote:
Our entry level RFI filtering mains cable features 8 cores of PTFE insulated silver-plated copper to act as a natural filter to eliminate unwanted mains noise. With 1x 2.5mm PVC insulated copper earth wire to ensure excellent grounding, TCI Baby Constrictor is capable of carrying more than 30 amps at 500 volts RMS, making it virtually transparent to the all important power supply. Sonic improvements include more detail, bigger soundstage, improved dynamics and a deeper bass. In addition, because of the quieter noise floor, low level details and micro dynamics are also noticeably improved. Some home cinema components, TVs and HD projectors also benefit from the reduced noise floor by showing a cleaner and improved picture.
Pseudoscientific blah-blah: no better or worse than fuel magnets....

"The cables themselves bring a sense of clarity and focus to a musical presentation as a whole..."

Spending ridiculous amounts of money on speaker cable brings the refreshing clarity of an empty bank account, or the focus only achieved by the sureness of total insanity.

A few years ago, when I had ears like a bat, I bought some of these (or the then equivalent): SCM50ASL Pro | ATC Loudspeakers Professional grade active studio monitors.

I bought some fancy interconnect cables to link them to my very expensive preamp and the speakers sounded like woolly ****e. I phoned ATC and their chief engineer just laughed and told me to buy Belden mic cable at £1.50/m. Their true magnificence was revealed and I took the expensive cables back and demanded a refund.

Audiophools I believe they are called.

Most people can't tell the difference between 320 Kbps VBR MP3s (compressed) and FLAC (uncompressed) but some people can!

Almost everyone can identify a 64kbps MP3 against a FLAC.

I'd be extremely interested to hear of legitimate blind tests of various grades of speaker wire. I imagine there is difference between 20p per metre bell wire and something costing £1 per metre up but doubt that there are many people who can hear differences beyond that price point.

My local hifi shop would sell me cable from £30 a meter upwards but he quite candidly told me to go to RS and buy some 2 core electrical cable, I did, got 30 meters of cable for about 8 quid and it works spot on as speaker cable.

Its a bit chunky though.

I have used that sort of cable in the past and it's fine.

I read this and showed it to a colleague at which we got into a discussion on the matter and both had the same view. Just but decent copper cable and job done.

The first broadcaster I worked for used mains cable in all the audio suites for speaker cable, and this guy had worked with someone who had done a fair bit of research and found exactly that, decent copper cable is as good as any fancy pants speaker cable, with mains cable obviously giving a decent amount of copper for money.
