2a instead of 1a for charging TomTom one xl

I have a 5v 1A Charger cable especially for my TomTom. But the screen is so steep in the hire car that it isn't long enough. I have a 5v 2a cable for my tablet. Can I safely use this instead? I know a voltage difference is an issue, but I suspect that I might be OK with an ampage difference. Would like confirmation before I plug it in though!

Your TomTom will only draw as much current as it needs - the current (amps) figures are the maximum current the charger is designed to supply, so the use of a higher-rated charger won't cause any problems.

Thank you! That's what I thought I knew, but putting my money on the line made me less sure!

It should charge quicker, but shouldn't be a problem.

Ummmmm, yes it will.
Just like a 500ma charger will charge at half the speed as a 1000ma charger does.

No it wont, It will only draw the amount of current it is designed to draw.

The TomTom in question is rated at 5V 1A, it will only draw a MAX of 1 amp regardless of whats available.

I reckon some devices can adapt. My iPhone 4S for example sits in its apple supplied charger for ages to charge, but plug it into the USB charger in the car ciggie slot and it charges in half the time. Surely the apple charger supplied with the device is correctly rated?
