Oops. Google Chrome cannot find....

Really annoying

Never happens with IE, that just stops working and needs to close

Why is the internet out to test my patience to the extreme

Try changing your DNS servers to
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
These are Google's DNS servers.
By default your router will tell your PC to use its internal DNS caching server and forward the lookups to your ISPs DNS servers.
Do you know how to do this? If not then which version of Windows?

Control Panel, Network Connections, or possibly Network & Internet, Network & Sharing Centre, then Change Adapter Settings.
Select WIreless or LAN as case may be. Right click, Properties. TCP/IP v4 in the list. Select, click Properties. Leave IP address selected Automatically but below that uncheck the Automatic DNS box and enter the 2 IPs. Click apply.

I would use FireFox. The above isn't a fix anyway it is a workaround.
Chrome has a bug in it that doesn't allow sufficient time for DNS to work normally in some circumstances. If you Google "google chrome dns lookup failed" (in a browser that works) you will find tons of threads about this issue.
Safari should be OK, or Opera or Firefox.
