Old (dud) laptop project - any ideas?

So I've been handed a Dell xps m1330 laptop that has died because of a known issue with the graphics chip. It has overheat and died.

What should I do with it? I thought about setting up freeNAS on a USB and using it as a nas but it only has about 500GB of storage and can't stick extra drives in.

Can't link it to the tv as it can't output any sort of display.

Any ideas? Or should I just stick it in the oven an attempt an at home reflow, might kill it, might get another few months out it.

its all fun until something falls off.

Rather than stick it in the oven, try a hot air gun instead, using a mask of tin foil pushed tightly around the chip.

We had to do some emergency repairs to a circuit board once and this worked for us.
if your only other option is to scrap the board then there's very little to lose, but putting it in the oven can increase the risk of thermal damage to other mounted compenents as well as the one you're interested in.

Cheers, don't think I can get access to a hot air gun (bar the hairdryer) though. Worst case scenario I've got a new portable hdd.

You could convert it to be a media player using Vortexbox or Xbmc or similar but without any kind of graphic display even that would be tricky to set up. There are such things as USB prt replicators ie a USB thingy that has a video out as well as LAN audio & keyboard mouse etc but you probably can't justify the spend.

Good shout but think you're right about the spend.
