Windows 8 hints & tips

Mrs C's laptop has this and we're slowly finding our way around it.
The biggest complaint she's had is with how many steps it takes to turn it off. So, if anyone else is experiencing this then try out Windows 8 shutdown tile - it works a treat.
Does anyone else have any other tips?

Can't you usually start shut down by simply a short press on the power button? Go to power options to set this up if not.

(This is from earlier Windows - but surely they wouldn't remove this functionality?)

Windows 8 is very different to previous versions bazza, it's never been the same since 3.1

If you also add the -f switch for a forced shutdown to your tile, it will shut down faster but if you haven't saved anything, it will just turn off without prompting to save.

I've already created these but as desktop icons rather tiles as I spend more time on the desktop.

This:

WinAero: Pin to 8

is a useful little tool which can be used to pin files, etc., to the start menu - the Windows 8 "pin to start" function only works for .exe files. I'm using it for a couple of PDFs I use frequently. Of course, you could do it with Desktop, but I find that with Windows 8 the Desktop is superfluous. . . what's the betting they remove it from Windows 9?
