ebay Digital Downloads Break Through The 1bn Barrier

That's an increase of 11.4% over 2011. The same figures show a big drop in sales of physical, disc-based media. Sales of CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays and video games fell by 17.6% in 2011, although they still account for around three quarters of the market.

Video games accounted for more than half of digital sales at 552m (+8%). Films and music had a smaller share of the digital market but grew more sharply, with downloaded films up by 20% and music by 15%.

Kim Bayley, director general of the ERA, says that breaking the 1bn barrier was an "incredible achievement" for retailers.
"This reflects their huge investment in new and innovative services which means you can buy music, video and games literally at any time of the day and wherever you are.
"At the same time I suspect that many people will be surprised to learn just how resilient the physical business still is with three-quarters of entertainment sales still on disc.
"Downloads offer convenience and portability, but people still seem to value the quality and tangibility of a physical product."

The complete breakdown of digital sales is as follows:
Music 383m (up 15.1% on 2011)
Films/video 98m (+20.3%)
Video games 552m (+7.7%)
Total: 1,033m (+11.4%)

Did you contribute to the 1bn

If so do you buy films, music &/or games online & why ?

If not why do you prefer to buy the physical product ?

I haven't bought any films on digital download as I like to get the Blu-ray release with the most extras
I'll get around to watching the extras eventually, maybe
These usually include a digital copy or download anyway if I ever want to use it

I've been buying my music as on digital download for the last year, although I spend much of my time listening to podcasts.

I'm not a gamer but I did get Angry Birds

music i buy online but I favourites are bought in physical CD form.
Games I buy physically for resale value. But when steam have their 75% off I buy digital games max 5 incase its pants.
Movies I buy physically for resale value.
I see the latter two as a 1-2 time use so makes sense to play and sell on. Music lives on

Movies I generally buy hard copy unless they're hard to find and available online.

Music I simply buy online download.

And games I always buy hard copy, to which I never sell so resale value means nothing to me

Being a tight Yorkshireman I'll buy from wherever is cheapest, I bought some CDs secondhand on the amazon marketplace cos they were a good few quid cheaper than buying the digital downloads and I can rip them myself.

DVDs and BD generally come from Amazon or the bargain bin at Tesco.

Games either from Amazon if it's new as they have a price promise to match the lowest price in the market at launch and offer the best preorder bonus codes IMHO OR CEX
