Mac to Mac

LizR today bought a MacBook Pro. Her previous computer was a MacBook.

So we are using Migration Assistant and it has transferred 100 gigs of stuff. Great. However it now keeps saying "transferring your applications folder" or "transferring files to support applications". It will then say - "Time remaining 5 minutes" When I look again it will say "Time remaining 1 hour 20 minutes".

My question - am I right in thinking it is looking at each app and updating it - thus the times change?

The reason I ask as I have a MacBook Pro which I bought 6 months ago- previous computer was also a Pro with the latest OS - so I just cloned it and it took 40 minutes. Liz is about 2 OS back so cloning would take out the latest OS on the new computer which is why I went for the Migration option.

Basically - do we just wait?

Thanks - I thought as much but just needed reassurance.

Another vote for Carbon Copy Cloner if you have the latest version of OSX though.

Happy people in the Rastrick household.

Sometimes it's best to just not touch the keyboard and go and have a cuppa

So true - but I am an impatient man and think "Doh - my computer transferred in 40 minutes- so how come it is taking so long, is it stuck? what do I do if it is?" Then I post on our tech forum and get told (so politely) to basically, chill.

I knew that (sort of)

Me too, but many a late night or nail biting afternoon has been had at work from impatience with IT upgrades. My colleague and I have a rule that if we're not both in we can phone each other and talk rubbish to pass the time and stop unnecessary keyboard meddling

That is a perfect system.
