Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion ???

I use an iMac as my desktop at home.

I don't ever muck around with it. It's used for internet browsing (alfaowner, autotrader and porn mostly - but not necessarily in that order). I've had it since about 2008 and it's been a delight to use and a pleasure to own in a virus-free world of OSX.

Last week my wife replaced her iPhone 3 with an iPhone 5. She plugged it into the Mac to set it up on iTunes and got a prompt saying that her iPhone 5 needed iTunes 7 to run.

That's ok I said - just go into iTunes and download the latest version.

She did. It wouldn't.

Turns out iTunes 7 (or 10.7 or somesuch) isn't compatible with OSX 10.5.8 which is what is on the iMac.

That's ok I said - just go onto Apple.com and upgrade to whatever is the latest operating system.

She did. It wouldn't.

I start hunting round Apple forums and find references all over the shop that tell me that:

(a) my 10.5.8 version is known as "Tiger"
(b) I should be running Mountain Lion
(c) I can't go from Tiger to Mountain Lion without first passing through Leopard
(d) I can't download Leopard anymore as it's not for general sale any longer
(e) I need to call Apple

I pop down to the local Apple store assuming that I can at least buy "Leopard" on a disc. No I can't. I need to call Apple.

I call Apple. They want some details first as Leopard isn't generally available. I give all my personal details and my machines ID and serial number and am told that they can offer me a copy of Leopard, but it's only to be used in order to then go onto Apple.com and download either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion as they are the supported versions. It costs me 18 quid to buy Leopard and it will be posted to me via snail-mail, it will then be 13 quid to download Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion.

That's a *lot* of operating systems for a 4 year period!

I've had XP on my laptop for at least that long if not longer. I think I've finally found something that's easier on Windows!

If you can get a disc of snow leopard from somewhere, eBay maybe, it has leopard on it.

Has your iMac got an Intel processor? If not, then the upgrade won't work.

I've no idea what I've got - but TBH I only want to go to Snow Leopard as that is fine for the version of iTunes we need.

The guy from Apple asked a zillion questions about my iMac versions/IDs/Serial numbers/hidden menu IDs (??) etc and then went quiet for a few moments before deciding my iMac could be upgraded to Mountain Lion if I wanted it to. He did say though that I'd probably need to go from 2GB of RAM to 4GB of RAM if I wanted decent performance otherwise to sticjk with Snow Leopard.

All in all I will stick with Snow Leopard until it goes out of supprt by which time my iMac will be 5+ years old and probably due replacement anyway.

FD, 10.5.8 is Leopard, Tiger was 10.4 (went up to 10.4.11).
If you can get Leopard for £18 then I would snap it up (have a look on fleabay for what people want for it) and then upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6, the last version is 10.6.8).
If you go into System Profiler it'll give you a good idea of whether you can use Mountain Lion (10.8) - I've not made that jump yet and am still on Snow Leopard.
One thing to be aware of is that any software that is PPC based (i.e. the 'old' angle-poise iMac), rather than Intel based, will probably not work under Mountain Lion.

Fred,

Follow this to find out the architecture of your mac

Does my Mac have an Intel or PowerPC processor?

To go deeper put the serial number in here to find out the specification it was shipped with to help ascertain what is the highest level of OS you can run.

Apple Serial Number Info // Decode your Mac's serial number!

As cobol says your already running leopard so the upgrade to snow leopard should be fairly simple as I have done this myself on a iMac of the same vintage as yours, although if you have a Mac with only 1GB or RAM I would recommend upgrading to 4GB as the performance of the machine will not be as good as it was before the upgrade.

The RAM upgrade is pretty easy on these, undo a couple of screws at the base of the screen slip the old RAM out put the new RAM in, replace cover (whilst Mac is turned off). Last time I looked for a 4GB stick for these it was about £50. RAM prices do fluctuate though.

The upgrade is a doddle too, but as ever, ensure you back up anything of significance to an external drive.

Ok - so if 10.5.8 is Leopard - then it's actually:

(a) my 10.5.8 version is known as "Leopard"
(b) I should be running Mountain Lion
(c) I can't go from Leopard to Mountain Lion without first passing through Snow Leopard
(d) I can't download Snow Leopard anymore as it's not for general sale any longer
(e) I need to call Apple

So what I'm about to receive in the post is then a "Snow Leopard" update?

^^^^

Yep that's right

Amongst other things Snow Leopard brings the "Mac App Store" from where you can then download Mountain Lion.

Panic over (I know you've all been worrying about this so thought I'd best let you know )

Snow Leopard disc arrived. 1 click install. All ok.

Downloaded 10.6.8 (I think) from Apple.com so am now as current as I need to be (without going to Mountain Lion).

Downloaded iTunes 10.7. Uploaded Java latest update for Photobox.

Now on Safari 4.0 too.

iPhone 5 synched up on iTunes 10.7.

My "measly" 2GB of RAM seems fine. No performance degradation I can see. Now have the App store on my iMac as well as on iPad and iPhone too

Just need to keep my eye out now for when Snow Leopard starts to go into retirement so I can skip up to Mountain Lion in advance! (I think I'll skip Ginger Tom and Fat Tabby )
