Cyanogenmod

Anyone had the guts to update their Android phone to run this? I would like to but a bit nervous I'll brick it.

Any noticeable differences in performance, battery life, customisation, generally a bit betterness?

Get yourself over to xda-developers and have a look around. Plenty of advice on this and many other ROMS out there.
I haven't been on standard software since I got my first Android phone.
Saying that, I have an HTC and always use Sense ROMs as I'm not keen on vanilla (plain) ROMs like Cyanogen.

I've had a look on my phone but i think my phone might not be compatible. I have a galaxy s2 but it is the NFC version and seems the different hardware config might not work with cyanogen.

I take it there are lots of different roms. Will check out the sense ROMs (unless they are HTC only).

Do you find the phone is much more responsive?

Have a look on XDA in the specific forum for your model. There will almost certainly be a customised version of Cyanogen on there.
Make sure you follow the instructions for unlocking your bootloader, installing custom recovery and gaining root to the absolute letter and you will be fine.
Yes, any ROM by a recognised developer will improve the responsiveness of your phone and may even add some decent features.

I wouldn't bother with Sense ROMs unless you have an HTC though. It will almost certainly be missing features and won't be completely stable.
Stick to optimised TouchWiz (Samsung's UI) or Cyanogenmod ROMs would be my advice.

I done it! Kinda. Didn't go for cyanogenmod as there are no stable builds for my phone, only nightly.

Went for neat rom lite xwlss v4.7 and got it installed last night. It's based on the stock firmware for my phone including Samsung's touchwiz launcher optimised with some boatware removed and a mod to add the multi window feature that is on the galaxy s3 and note 2. Don't feel so bad about my ageing phone now.

Big thanks to antpal for pointing me to androidforums.com and a gent on that forum called ironass.

Recommend it for anyone with an s2 that's feeling a bit left behind.

its all fun until something falls off.
