Ubuntu 12.10

Anyone migrated?

I'm on 12.04 LTS. Not convinced of the advantages of the new release. Any views?

Be assured, I am asking about my wishbones on the Ubuntu forum.

Can't remember which version I've got - currently staying away with family so can't check! When I'm back I'll look it up, but I think I'm on the 12.04 too. I may give the upgrade a bash, just for a laugh. I find ubuntu full of strange bugs as it is so it's not a problem in that respect!

Let us know how you get on if you choose to migrate.

Having trouble with SSD's and 12.10, just get a grub errors on startup

12.04 works great though.

Ive been installing 12.04 and upgrading to 12.10 while keeping the old grub.

I didn't like the idea of Canonical monitoring my desktop searches to deliver Amazon results. You could opt out of the Amazon results but it was not at all clear that Canonical were not still collecting my search data. So I have switched to Mint.

Moved to 12.10 on my 64 bit machine, mainly because of it being LTS. Got used to it very quickly. Still running 10.10/Bodhi on an old steam-powered box.

Am thinking of putting Mint on an external HD, but not sure if it will dual-boot properly...

What's Amazon?

I've ordered a 16gb flash drive to install it on to to give it a try.

How do I opt out of the Amazon thing? Is it an option during installation?

I wasn't aware of it. Not as far as I can recall.

I haven't looked into it.... not had a chance. I'm guessing you can, but I didn't know about it, as I don't really use Amazon much and haven't been aware of any other comments regarding the issue. The various forums should help, though, sorry I can't....

You can opt out of receiving the Amazon results post install. I wanted to opt out of delivering my search results to Canonical but it is not clear that this option covers it.

You can opt out via the system settings, privacy. Bottom right will have a switch turning off live amazon search results and other personal things are listed there.
I started playing with ubuntu recently and have 12.10 set up on my netbook. Liked it bar some of the stock apps, which I swapped of straight away. I opted for 12.04 on my desktop as it seemed more stable.
What apps are you guys using?
Currently I have:
Clementine - Replaces rhythm box
UnityMail - Desktop mail notification
VLC - replaces media player
Wine - Install windows software
Steam - Gaming
Gimp - Image editor
StormCloud - Weather App
Chromium - Replaces firefox

Clementine - Interesting.....I am not happy with rhythm box (BTW I'm still on 12.04 LTS)
VLC - replaces media player (installed it - not really used it much)
Wine - Install windows software (not used at all yet - any good)
Gimp - Image editor (used this - and digiKam)
StormCloud - Weather App (downloaded this yesterday)
Chromium - Replaces firefox (I'm interested in this - I am using FF, have for ages, out of interest, why did you switch?

Cheers

Clementine is very good, feels easier to use for me as I couldnt get on with the pre installed app. One think I like the most is when you choose a song via "enter" or double click the song goes into the playlist and doesnt automatically play. I found that really good as I always had to right click and add to.

Wine - Havent had a chance to mess around with it yet as its on my desktop. But in theory it will allow me to install microsoft word and football manager. If they install then the app has done its job.

Chromium was just to have a go at something different and I stuck with it. Never been a fan of firefox on my netbook as with my specs it just doesnt feel as quick as Google Chrome or Chromium. The only extension I use is adblock which is on chrome extensions so I didnt have much reason to stick around. Maybe install chromium and have a go, you can import your bookmarks from firefox and see if you can live without firefox. The speed alone of the program and the website loading is quicker for me.
