iPhone 5

Just caught up with the San Francisco launch of Apple's new smartphone.

Seems slightly taller than the previous one and a better processor.

They seem to have kept away from the current trend of a nearly 5" screen dimension (and obvious increase in case size) and have a newer version of Apples OS.

Most noticeably, it runs on a much faster network than it's main rivals do, they'll catch up later next year.

Could the access speed be the clincher for those on Android/Windows/Blackberry to swap?

I'll guess current iPhone users are already working themselves into a frenzy to get the latest incarnation.

BBC News - Apple iPhone 5 unveiled with taller screen and 4G

Changing the i/o port configuration is a no no in my book, just to sell the 25 adapter so it'll fit to your existing iPod/iPad/iPhone devices.

...if wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets...

I've already placed an order for one via Carphone Warehouse

(I am due an upgrade anyway - wouldn't have gone for one so quickly if I hadn't have been )

As said, the fact that it renders all the docking systems as obsolete then this is a cruel trick to play.

I'm hoping that there won't be any teething problems.....not that I had any with the 4 I got on it's launch day, not even the infamous signal drop out.... Hmmmmm......there seems to be a pattern developing here!

My wife will be following your lead - she's not due an upgrade until next summer I think.

I agree with you. I'm lucky I guess as I don't have any peripherals that use that socket apart from the charger. (I'll probably need a couple of adapters though still, one for the car and one for the "old" charger I lug around in my work bag. Bet they won't be cheap though..... Just checked and they already on the Apple Store at 25 & available in October!!!!)

My contract on my 4 ran out a couple of months ago, but I don't see any compelling reason to upgrade. Will wait and see.

Its a step in the right direction imho

Will new iPhone designs include Europe's common charger? | TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

Its fairly obvious these tweaks are aimed at streaming media, a 16:9 screen ratio, LTE to provide decent data rates, cloud sourcing media will be so much nicer on a iPhone 5 for these changes.

There is only so much you can do to the basic design of a smartphone. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Bluetooth and its services are independent of the os so there shouldn't be a problem unless the implementation deviates from the standard.

The USB one would be a backwards step and limiting in future so its not surprising, i can't see any of the other manufacturers sticking with it, nokia is going with inductive charging after all doing away with the port altogether.

I bought one of them yesterday as my 4 has to go back to work, there's a noticeable 2D render difference, not in speed, more in smoothness of transitions and effects.

I know they had trouble with case gaps and signal drop-outs, but render?
