Noob Android question

I've recently taken the plunge and acquired an Android smart phone (FWIW it's an HTC Wildfire - a very early one called a G8 or A3333). It uses Android 2.2.1.

During the work day I need to have the phone on silent or at the very most, on vibrate. What I'd like to do is to be able to override the silent or vibrate behaviour for a few callers who have to be able to contact me immediately so for them only, I'd like to have the ringer on.

Is this possible on my phone? If not, then for interest's sake, is it a limitation of all Android versions, just mine or what?

In the event it cannot be done on my "new" HTC, can a Windows phone do this, or an iPhone or any other phone?

Hi MH,
I don't think this would be anything to do with Android OS, more likley to be an HTC, or, even a phone setting.

It's certainly possible. There are lots of apps that do all sorts of clever things along these lines. Google what you want to achieve and you'll find something.

Semi silent or selective silence. I've never used either though.

If you go to similar apps there are quite a few that do what you need.

Thank you all, especially KB and spx for making me look for an app. Being a bit dopey at the moment, I honestly never thought to look for an app to do this - for some reason I imagined that if I couldn't find anything on the phone as supplied it wasn't going to happen.

I'll look into the app settings profiles as indicated on the Android forum and will also scout around for other apps too. Don't need anything particularly sophisticated but the ability to override a "default profile" looks ideal.

If you go to the phone book and select a contact, one of the options is "ringtone" not sure if this over rides the silent profile or not but worth a go.

Why not set your default ringtone to a slient (or very quiet) mp3 file, then set a custom ringtone for the individuals you want to be notified about?

You can set a custom ringtone from the Contacts List - select the contact and then select Options from the menu.

At least I can on my phone (ZTE Blade running Android 2.2).
