Samsung fined $1billion

Legitimate protection of patents or just protectionism?

Samsung vs Apple

(Lets try to keep it civil)

That reads to me as if Samsung admitted copying if they were asking to pay $519 million!

When I had a Samsung a few years back there was software around then to make it "look" a bit like an iPhone. I really don't know how close they are these days, although Son of has a Samsung Galaxy. I suppose it's annoying when anyone copies what you've done - this is just a bigger version of that, isn't it?

I don't think that anybody denies they copied certain things but how far can a person/company go to claim they "own" something.

The statement added that it was "unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners".
In Perth we have a garage called D&G. Dolce & Gabbana tried to stop them using that name. In the end they backed down when the garage promised not to get involved in the fashion business. Although the Garage also claimed they got a promise from D&G not to enter the automotive repair business

So Samsung copied Apple, meaning they are pretty much the same tablet / phone, but both Samsung tablet and phone is a cheaper, with much cheaper apps and a far better OS.....have Apple thought about this law suit

The only problem will be if Apple win their next law suit which is to ban all these Samsung products from the US.

I agree with this.

Apples are for people who like things quick & simple. Android is for geeks.

Last time i played with an Iphone it was like a baby toy!

Anyway back to the original arguement. Hasnt Apple been fined 500million back the other way for stealing samsungs designs?

I really hate the way Apple steal other peoples idea's rename them and then make out they invented them.
This has happened with WiFi - Apple called it 'Airport', DNLA they call 'Airplay'. They also state that they were the first phone to use Apps, this is bs as I has a Siemens SX1 years before with a big screen and downloadable apps!

It's pretty sad, but it's not only Samsung and Apple having these lawsuits, there's a whole bunch of companies suing Apple, Samsung or some other company, Patents are not working very well if you ask me, probably too complicated and open to interpretation, reminds me of the F1 rules and regulations.

It seems to be a case of who got their lawyers to the patent office first rather that who "invented" something first.

Where the court cases are held obviously has an effect as well.

Outside USA - Apple loses

Inside USA - Apple wins

The only winners in all of this will be the lawyers.

following this ruling Samsung shares have slumped by 7.5% - wiping $12bn off the campany's market value.

I hope this ruling will be good for innovation.
Apple have certainly used some elements previously available to produce truly innovative and highly desirable products - which Samsung and others have then rushed to imitate.
Perhaps they will now have to be original and innovative themselves in order to compete with Apple rather than just coming out with copycat products.

I am furious with apple for trying to Fark up their closest competitor with this. The richest company in the world sues its main rival. Its like ford suing toyota for making a car with a round steering wheel. I think this is a massive PR own goal for apple. I will think twice about buynig one of their products again. they charge you a hefty premium for what it basically the apple image/ ethos/ design, but when the competition is getting too hot they are straight into the Law courts. It stinks!

Well, if Ford had patented the round steering wheel you might have had a point.
A better analogy might be if Ford sued Toyota for making a car with a heated front windscreen - which Ford DO have a patent for - and no doubt would sue any other manufacturer who infringed it.

Interesting vid here - interview with jury chairman explaining their verdict.

Why would you not protect something you own? Just because you are Apple?

Patents are like F1 rules and like F1 rules they are circumvented. Which has to be moderated by lawyers.

My Italian Engineer friend informed my at the weekend, Alfa have a patent on a specific engine sound. I wonder if an Audi sounded like an Alfa all of a sudden, what would the connotations be of that infringement?

I never heard search bobbins, WiFi Is a trademark not a technology, Apple called their device that implements IEEE 802.11 the Airport, its just a name for a device. There are also plenty of other streaming devices that utilise DNLA.

What it seems that you hate is Apples very affective marketing.

Oh, and Airport are amongst the most stable wifi routers available and have quite a few nice features to boot.

i watched the video. Interesting. I still think apple are trying to stifle competition by misusing patent law.
