Doesn't say on the spec if the noise measurement is in dB (A) or (C).

if it does reduce external noise to 85dB they are illegal in the work place as the mandatory hearing protection level is 85 dB(A).

For them to be ear defenders they need to detail attenuation figures at various frequency ranges and give an SNR (signal to noise ratio) value.

Does this info come on a leaflet with the "defenders"

If you tried to wear those in our factory I'd tell you to take them home

For the real deal you're looking at about £70

I don't understand how they can state they reduce noise to 85Db (a,b,c or d......in fact who uses b, c or d these days ?)

I assume they work on the basis of a maximum noise output coming from the machinery ? The ear defenders can only provide for a level of attenuation

They can't that's why you need the table giving attenuation figures for given frequencies then you measure the noise at the harmful frequencies and subtract the attenuation figure from your dB(a) reading.

This gives you the actual noise at the ear average reading

There's a bit more to it than that but that's the simplest way I can describe it

So what your saying is, take a Db reading across an audible spectrum (ie 63hz, 125hz, 250hz, 1khz, 2khz 4khz & 8khz) apply the 'A'weighing then subtract the sound attenuation spectrum for the ear defenders. Then you would add (using log) the values to give a resultant Dba at the ear.

I'm a qualified acoustic engineer you muppet, I only wanted to show my new gadget off ! I've handled cases for a few breweries and factories (noise complaints from residents). I've handled so many cases for Cardiff crown court they employed me to sound test their own courts.

Hook line and sinker

I should have picked it up after the 6th post, nobody that didn't understand the topic would have know that b c OR d are not used

but that was a durty trick doing Db instead of dB

Might have to get some of those.

My work isn't all that noisy, and ear defenders are not required, however there are always people making some noise which is annoying.

However I might wait for the version with a USB input.
