Duplicate File Maintenance Tool

Been using this for a while, it's a free tool that helps locate duplicate files on your computer, it's not just a filename based utility as it does a bit level compare.

Great tool to help free up space on hard drives.

Find duplicate files with Auslogics Duplicate File Finder

Would that be useful for when you have two repositories for your photos, and occasionally copy across from one to the other?

In other words, can it be used the other way around - identifying the files that aren't present on the other drive, and copying them across?

Typical bloody end user!

You demo the app, which has a defined purpose, first thing the 'user' wants to do?

Do something totally different with it that is not within scope!!

Damned right

It's called lateral thinking rather than tunnel vision

I use Duplicate Cleaner by Digital Volcano. Also free.

As for finding files that don't exist in a backup directory, either use incremental backup software, or just copy everything across and then when it finds the first duplicate, tell it not to import.

I do the latter - but it takes hours because it seems to check each file individually.

Assuming it's all Windows or a network accessible via Windows, Microsoft SyncToy is good for this.

Potential stupid question alert. If its bit by bit comparison. If you have the same file (I'm thinking duplicate mp3s) but the file named are slightly different will it notify you.

example - tush.mp3 and Zztop-tush.mp3

Both tracks the same but different names. My music folder has been a bit neglected.

You can compare in a variety of ways, not just the file name. Well, at least you can with Duplicate Cleaner
