The Surface

So, thoughts on Microsoft's proposed new tablet to rival the ipad?

As usual I'm too poor to get any of these gadgets so I'll do my usual and just read lots of reviews and make a decision based on them rather that any experience.

I think the pro version that runs full windows 8 will be good depending on battery life but very expensive.

Yup! I would always buy a product from a long established player in a totally different field. My FIAT hair dryer, Honda telly, Boeing MPV and belling TV are testament to that,

The price point will be interesting, along with battery life... The rest will come down to how people do or don't like the interface itself and that's not going to change too radically between tablets unless you get people like HTC building on top of the base (unlikely). I can't see it being completely entry level unless they are wanting manufacturers to focus there.

i can't see microsoft letting manufacturers build on top. just the usual bloatware and branded recovery options.

They would have a minor track record if they did (HTC Sense/Flow and others on top of Windows 6.x) but I agree it's unlikely. I guess it depends which business model they see as being strongest in the long run.

I think it will be interesting too see how thy get W8 to run. It's clearly aimed towards business markets as it will be the first tab able to run a full Office suite. But, I don't see them convincing any Applephiles or opensource fans too soon.

I am still laughing over "MSFT Origami" from 2006. Can't see what they learned from those painful lessons

Then maybe you will find this infographic interesting.. this is not their first foray into tablets, that's for sure. The Apple marketing machine is just too clever at making it seem like they have come up with a new idea.

Actually, I think he was against it at the time as no one had worked out a decent enough UI, once apple had sorted that out, it was all systems go. If he knew what the benefits could be, he certainly downplayed it, but then he would as would any other competitor.
