If you leave your ipod ...

... playing on shuffle, what will it do when it gets to the end
of your tunes?

Will it just stop or will it start from the beginning again?

If it's on shuffle, how will it get to the end?

Like shuffling a pack of cards, you can decide when to stop or you could just keep going on until your batteries run out, then with new batteries you could continue to shuffle until you choose to stop or batteries run out, then with new batteries you could continue to shuffle until you choose to stop or batteries run out, then with new batteries you could continue to shuffle until you choose to stop or batteries run out, then with new batteries you could continue to shuffle until you choose to stop or batteries run out.....

So, what you're saying is it's like shuffling a pack of cards, you can decide when to stop or you could just keep going on until your batteries run out, then with new batteries you could continue to shuffle until you choose to stop or batteries run out, then with new batteries you could continue to shuffle until you choose to stop or batteries run out, then with new batteries you could continue to shuffle until you choose to stop or batteries run out, then with new batteries you could continue to shuffle until you choose to stop or batteries run out?

Except shuffling a pack of cards doesn't entail each card appearing at the front... That would be randomized playback. Shuffling the cards only determines the order in which they are played...

Here, each song is put into a random order and assigned a value of "0". This is changed to "1" when it's played, thus ensuring a) a shuffled playlist as the random order is often, though not always, planned and b) if you're really sad and get to your penultimate song you'll know what's coming next.

The question surely is, if the batteries run out part way through a shuffled list, does it realise it is part way through and continue as before or lose it's place and potentially re-play the previous tracks.

When my ipod is on shuffle it displays the number of tunes
that it has played and the total number on file. eg 167 of 4129.

Therefore it knows how many it has to play, there is an end point.

I was just wondering what it does when it reaches 4129 out of 4129?

I suspect that it stops but would be impressed if it's clever enough
to reset itself to 1 of 4129 and start the process all over again

It would carry on as before, as each shuffle is saved as a temporary playlist. That playlist only gets deleted once shuffle is turned off, or a new shuffle list is requested. When the iPod runs out of battery, it retains its last play point in memory, so would carry on from where it left off.
The only time that it wouldn't do this, is if you were to sync the iPod with new or additional tracks.

If you just have 'shuffle' on, then when it has played all of the tracks it will stop.
If you have both 'shuffle' and 'repeat all' on, it will keep playing forever, reshuffling every time it has played through all of the tracks.

So there is no end (other than battery life) - but is there a beginning.

And which came first?

There is an end unless you have it on repeat all.
