Put simply, what is it and do I need it?

I managed to post on here from my new android phone last night but it was a major fiddle. Does said app thing make it easier?

No idea mate but glad you asked the question. I've had the annoying tapatalk pop up a few times and wondered if it was worth the hassle seeing as I've managed OK on my phone so far.

I'm probably less tech-aware than you are.

I've never used TapaSpam as the default mobile browser does the job

I've seen a few users complain about it as it seems to disable access to a few of the forum features.

The app is the best way to access the forum from a phone in my opinion. The iPhone version I can vouch for anyway, I'm sure the android version will be pretty similar. Worth 2 or whatever it is.

Tapatalk makes it immeasurably easier to browse, post, search, PM and generally use the forum (not just this one - any forum with the Tapatalk plugin installed).

It gives you a basic cut down forum - so no IMs and the like (but you can still upload photos) - so browsing and load times are much faster.

They do a free version if you want to try it out. I paid the 2 for the proper version though as it was so much better than trying to browse on a mobile browser.

It is quicker to browse stuff like your favourites and much more responsive than using a web browser as it sizes better etc etc. It is, however, frickinn' a-noying as you cannot see polls, have to commit smilies to memory, cannot see strikeout text as struck out and some of the threads do not show as read.

I'd score it about 6/10, but I do use it all the time in preference to a web browser on a mobile and constant screen resizing.

I have this, as others state it is better than the browser but the one issue i found was that you can't quote.
As Keithy says 6/10

I can quote if I tap above a post (where the username is) as I get a pop-up style bar wirh Quote/Share/More but I don't seem to be able to multiquote.

Sure you can quote! No multiquote though.

Or what Keithy said. (It's also press-and-hold on the post body, and is how you get to edit your posts)

You can multiquote on the android one. Both versions are fantastic. However the android version is superior. Definitely get it. Worth the small outlay for sure.

When people say it's better than the native browser, am I right to assume they mean if you're connected by phone signal rather than by wifi?
The advantage being that it would otherwise be very slow using that method?

I find safari on the iphone far quicker than tapatalk.......however, tapatalk is very useful if you want to upload the odd photo to a forum.......that's the only time I use it if I'm surfing AO on the phone, but it is invaluable for iphones from that point of view

Never bothered with crappatalk, because I use the IM system all the time and removing this feature makes it pointless for me any way.

Besides I like seeing it un chopped down, never thought mobile sites are any good for decent smart phones.

If it isn't Lucifer himself who is responsible for the abortion that is the "new" AROC site?

Tried it, Binned, not for me.
Don't have any issues browsing AO with standard browser on my HTC...
Each to their own though.

PP's a good chap New site / forum is much better but still way too difficult & restrictive when it comes to adding photos, so much so I always link to my threads on here

I use the photobucket and flickr apps, you it gives you IMG tags too to import into safari.

I am sure he is SR but it is only a tiny bit better than it was. The forum software he is using is not very good. Very old posts still on the front page, difficult to navigate etc. It could / should be a lot better. I am an AROC member but don't bother with the website very often. To be fair I don't bother with AROC NW much either - very little seems to happen there. My 2p.

I have been to a few meets but they are mid week and always at a pub. Pubs are for beer and beer and cars don't mix in my view. The only other things the section seems to do are go to National events which I do anyway. Take a look on the new website and in most of the AROC Mags and you won't find any activity. It's a shame because they all seem to be nice people.
There isn't any personnel overlap with AONW at all not one person that I am aware of.
